“Why don’t you come down this afternoon? I have a couple of places in mind we can go to, to just look.”

“Not to try on, right?”

“Wear nice underwear, just in case. You might see something that is worth your time.”

“Okay, Mom. It’s just after nine. How about ten thirty?”

“I’ll see you then.”

She forced herself up out of bed and got into the shower. Her body always felt different after a night with Paul, her privates all slick and spongy. She loved the way he touched her; the things he said to her made her shiver when she thought of it, certain phrases he used repeating through her brain.

“Your body just doesn’t quit,” he’d murmur. “I want to make you feel good.”

When he said that, she almost fainted. She’d never had a guy who cared if she was enjoying it or not. It was enough if he came, and she wondered if they even knew or cared if she did. Paul always made sure she had an orgasm.

Trembling with the thought, she smiled, turning off the shower.

“Get it together, girl. You’re going to try on wedding dresses with your mother. Stop thinking about Paul’s penis.”

Rummaging through her underwear drawer, she found her nicest bra and panties set. Getting them on, she stood in front of the mirror, trying to imagine her mother looking at her. Turning from side to side, she liked her body. It was big, but she was strong and shapely with a small waist and big everything else. The memory of Paul’s big hands on the inside of her round thighs, moving them apart, sent shivers down her spine.

“Stop it!” she cried, laughing.

Just then her phone beeped; it was Paul.

“Are you sending me sex vibes?” she asked.

“I didn’t say who this is,” he teased. “What’s going on?”

“I’m getting ready to drive down to San Marcos to wedding dress shop with my mother.”

“Oh, wow!” he said. “I’m excited, I think.”

They laughed together. “I know. It can be wonderful, or it can go all wrong.”

“You’ll make it wonderful. I feel left out, but I guess the guy doesn’t see the dress before the wedding.”

“We don’t have to follow any rules.”

“What’d she say about having the wedding up here?”

“She’ll help with the food and decorations. She’s not too happy about no church.”

“You know I’m excited about the food too, so don’t leave me out.”

“Paul, you can have whatever you want. I’m thrilled that you want to be involved with that.”

Oh, he wanted to be involved all right. He’d been checking out recipes online when there was downtime at the station, and things like chicken enchiladas, beef Wellingtons and lobster mac and cheese were definitely on his list of must-haves.

Finally, Emily had to leave for her mother’s house. The ride down the mountain wasn’t the usual relaxing drive, the anticipation of having to try on wedding dress samples in sizes she’d never worn making her anxious. This was supposed to be the most exciting time of a girl’s life, yet she was dreading it.

They didn’t linger at the house. The colonel watched them drive off after Alice insisted on driving. The first shop they went to had fittings by appointment only, and the first one available wasn’t until mid-October. The second shop reminded Alice of a Broadway costume shop, so they didn’t even go in. Finally, the third one, in spite of being a little bitJersey Shore, had a parking space right in front.

“Oh, this might be an omen,” Alice said, quickly pulling in before anyone could take it.

“Wait, before we go in,” Emily said, putting her hand out to Alice, “can I say something?”

Frowning, Alice hated anything heartfelt or confrontational. “I guess so. What?”
