So on the night Annie moved out, Steve quickly called Lisa.

“I’m unexpectedly free,” he said. “Can I see you?”

“That would be wonderful. I was starting to worry that we were destined to meet in the playground for eternity.”

“No, thankfully, those days might be over. But I do have to clear up a misunderstanding that I let go on because it was just easier to do it that way. You might be mad.”

“Oh no, what is it?” she asked.

“My wife, my ex-wife that is, just moved out.”

“Were you still living together?”

“Yeah. I didn’t feel right about formally dating until we were living apart, and now that’s possible.”

“Well, that’s a good thing, right?” she asked.

“I hope so, for you,” he said. “But there’s one more thing. I hate saying it over the phone.”

“Ugh, Steve.”

“I know.”

“Well, what is it?”

“She’s going to have a baby. See, we met each other, had sex within the first hour, and she got pregnant. We got married right away.”

“Even though you didn’t know each other?”

“Yeah. I know it sounds terrible…” he said, embarrassed.

“It does sound pretty bad. And now you’re going to have a baby together.”

“Yep. A baby.”

“How long have you known each other?”

“Five months.”

“And how far along is she?”

“Five months.”

“Ugh.”

“Yep. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me for not mentioning that. I didn’t set out to betray her. Your father didn’t know I was married, or trying to get a divorce, when he introduced us.”

“My dad can be a big problem.”

“Not for me he isn’t,” Steve said. “So what do you think? Can I pick you up?”

“I’ll come there,” she said, thinking it would be a better idea if she had her own getaway vehicle, just in case.

“Great! I’ll give you the address.”

After they hung up, Steve ran around tidying up. He looked at the bed, not knowing when the last sheet change had taken place. The contents of the linen closet were daunting, but he persevered and found what he thought was the right sheets for the bed. They only had two sizes of beds, a king and two twins, and the twins were obviously smaller. After a few starts and stops, he finally got the clean sheets on the bed and pulled the comforter back over so it looked neat.

Out in the kitchen, he looked in the fridge, which seemed emptier than usual. It didn’t occur to him that Annie had taken most of the food. He got on the phone right away and ordered pizza, wings and a salad. There would be something to eat in case he’d interrupted her dinner.
