“I might as well go in,” he said, turning to kiss her. “I forgot to ask you; this weekend is the masked ball. We didn’t talk about going, but it’s tradition, you know. The masked ball is the beginning of carnival season.”

“Definitely. I’m going to wear my wedding dress. I already figured out how to take part of the train and make it bigger across the front.”

“Cool! That’s a great idea. Can I drive you to work?”

“No, that’s okay. Gus will take me in.”

He got out of bed, and instead of going to the bathroom like he usually did, he went into the kitchen to start coffee.

“I’ll bring you breakfast. Let me get a shower first.”

“Okay, Steve.”

She wasn’t going to interrupt whatever was going on with him. Although they forgot the bath, she’d let him serve her breakfast in bed anytime.

Grabbing her phone, she quickly sent a group text to her girlfriends.I was pampered last night and got breakfast in bed today.

Silencing her phone, she didn’t want him to hear the text alerts. They came right away, too.

Work it, sister!Katrina said.

And Maggie next,Take a picture of breakfast. He might regret getting you used to that treatment.

Annie barked out a laugh. Her friends were wonderful. In a few minutes, he came out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist, the opening just over his left thigh. Making a beeline for the kitchen, she heard the sounds of coffee being poured and the toaster engaging.

First he brought coffee while the toaster did its thing.

“You’re looking pretty fetching in that towel,” she said, lifting a corner to take a peek. “When do I get my turn?”

“How about first thing tonight? I’ll bring something home for dinner, and you can finally get that bath.”

“I’ll think about it all day now,” she said. “I won’t get any work done. The dogs will go hungry.”

He laughed, happy that she was teasing him. It was not something they’d done in a while, and he was sorry he’d let it happen.

“I’ll never take you for granted again. I promise.”

“Steve, it’s okay. This is a hard time in a marriage. We’ll get through it.”

“I don’t want to just get through it though. That’s what I’ve always done. Taken the easy way out. Working for my dad instead of doing what I wanted to do.”

“It’s not too late,” she said. “As soon as the baby is born, I’ll make it my goal to get another social worker job, okay? You can do whatever you want then. You can go back to school, or work for yourself. Whatever you want. I’ve said this before.”

Annie was saying the same things she’d said in the past, the same words Lisa had said, only this was the first time Steve really heard Annie.

“Okay, well, I appreciate it. I really do. Let’s have a baby first though. Where would you even get a job?”

“There are other social service jobs in Saint John’s Parish, Steve. I just couldn’t apply because of you-know-who here. I can also travel to New Orleans. It’s only an hour drive.”

“I’m getting all nervous now,” he said. “Who would watch the baby?”

“Day care, Steve. You’re getting ahead of yourself. We’ll get your mother in AA, and she can come with us.”

“She claims she’s going over there today.”

“Well, I’ll do everything I can to facilitate it. We can even stop drinking. I don’t like the way it makes me feel anyway, never have. Being pregnant has been a great excuse not to drink.”

He fixed her breakfast, and while she ate, he dressed for the day, determined to see to it that his mother was taken care of.
