“I’m so sorry. I couldn’t say anything before because he had just broken up with Amber Saturday morning.”

“Oh, ugh. Okay, well, I get it. Did you know, Maggie?”

“No. Not right away. Can we go inside? I’m starving.”

They walked toward the café, chattering.

“I knew she wouldn’t approve because of what she went through with Russ,” Katrina explained.

“But what about Alphé?”

“Alphé broke up with me, Annie. He wanted to try it out with Calista.”

“So that’s why I see them in the grocery store together! I thought it was kind of weird but figured because she babysat for him, it must have been okay. But weren’t you trying to get pregnant with him?”

“Well, listen to this.”

Katrina told her the entire story about taking Calista to Walmart for a pregnancy test and doing the test but then telling Katrina when it was positive that it couldn’t be Alphé’s because he’d had a vasectomy.

“No way! Whose baby is Calista’s, then?”

“That guy from the Bureau of Land Management!”

“Ugh, no way!”

“But that’s not all, Annie,” Maggie said. “Let her tell you the rest of it.”

“I did the test,” Katrina said. “I was late.”

“You did a test in Walmart, too?”

“I did, and it was positive!”

She grabbed Katrina’s arms. “And it’s Dave’s?”

“Yep!”

The women held on to each other’s hands, so excited to be experiencing their firstborns together.

“I’m in shock,” Annie said. “It’s so exciting. All three of us.”

“Don’t forget Calista now. She’s due around the same time I am.”

“I need to reach out to her. But honestly, she’s kind of a dud. What does she do all day?”

“I guess just hide out. Try not to judge her,” Katrina said accusingly. “Her husband died. She’s struggled to make ends meet.”

“Sorry,” Annie said, not sorry. “She’s boring.”

“There’s so much about her, though. She was a botany major in college, and she grows herbs for the local faith healer. And she’s a walking dictionary on the saints.”

“I’d love to have a garden!” Maggie cried.

“Me too,” Annie said. “Okay, I’ll give her another chance.”

“Okay! On that note, I’d better get moving,” Katrina said. “I’m gone all week, but I’ll be in touch.”

They hugged each other, kissing cheeks. Maggie and Annie watched Katrina drive off.
