“Aw, I’m lucky, too.” She bent down to scratch Brulee behind the ears. “Thank you, too.”

“I’d better get back to work. See you tonight.”

They said goodbye. Looking around the kitchen, Maggie thought of having a snack, taking a nap, and being a slug for the rest of the day. Instead, she kicked her flip-flops off and slipped her feet into cowboy boots. She was going for a horseback ride.

Chapter 11

The weekend had arrived. Katrina’s week away from Dave was awful. They talked on the phone hourly, texted constantly, she was in tears by the third day, missing him so badly, and by the fourth, he was like a wild man, almost getting killed when he hit a deer and ended up in a ditch.

On Friday afternoon, she stood next to him with her suitcases around her in the driveway, looking at the mangled metal. “You could have died.”

“I could have, but all I kept thinking was I have to get home and get my dirty underwear in the washing machine before she gets home.”

Laughing, she threaded her arm around his waist. “I guess you’ll be getting a new truck.”

“Believe it or not, I drove this home. The insurance company is coming, and they can tow it away. I should have been able to swerve to avoid the deer, but I was like a zombie, missing you all week.”

“Ugh, that’s not good. I got little done yesterday because I was miserable, too. From now on two days away is all I’ll do. If I have to fly out again the next day, I will. But no more four-day-in-a-row trips.”

“Maybe we’ll get used to it.”

“No, I won’t. Plus with the baby coming, what was I thinking? I’m not leaving my kid.”

“The nanny and the kid will come with you. I’ll come when I can. You shouldn’t change plans after you’ve seen your boyfriend’s wrecked truck. Let’s get you inside away from this mess.”

“This conversation is hysterical. When I told you I was pregnant, you were going to stay with the kid while I traveled. Now, I’ll have an entourage.”

“Just trying to be supportive,” he said, laughing.

He grabbed her suitcases and followed her to the door.

“It’s so good to be home. What’s the plan for the weekend?”

“This weekend is R and R. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday. My dad invited us for lunch after church. I thought we could tell him about the baby then.”

“Okay, if you don’t think it’s too early.”

“I don’t. He knows we’re together.”

“Does he even know who I am?”

“Of course, you’re Blanche DuBois from the masked ball. He loved that.”

“Jeez, too funny.” She dragged a suitcase to the bedroom, Dave following with the rest. “I just want to unpack and get in the shower.”

“We have urgent business to attend to,” Dave said, reaching for her to hold again. “Your boyfriend needs to make love to you right away.”

“You are my number one reason for doing anything right now. Unpacking can wait. I’ll be right out.”

He held onto her arm when she tried to leave the hug.

“I’ll take one with you if you’ll let me.”

“I’d be honored.”

She reached out for his hand, and after he followed her inside, she shut the door.

Calista had everything organized, but she was careful not to be completely dependent on Alphé.
