“If this doesn’t work out between us, I’m in trouble,” she said.

“It’s going to work out. It works.. I want you here. Do you want to be here?”

“I do.”

“Okay, end of story.”

During the brief time they were together, she worked at making Alphé’s house more comfortable, less shabby. With that completed, she had to find something to do. She called Katrina, who had become her voice of reason.

“What did you do before you offered to help Alphé with babysitting?”

It was a simple answer; she did what she had to do. She went to church, she baked, she gardened, she thrift shopped and couponed and stood in line at food giveaways at the community center. Now that she was with Alphé, he didn’t want her to do the obviouspoor personthings. It didn’t look right since he worked.

“You can still garden and bake and coupon.”

“I need to make some money,” Calista said. “I want to have college funds for my kids above what Austin set up for them, in case he asks for it back. Porter doesn’t want to fish, thank god.”

“Well, the thing to do is figure out what you like doing and then do it.”

“I like kids.”

“You’ve got six there and one on the way. I think that’s covered.”

“I mean I could babysit.”

Katrina thought for a moment.

“Oh, okay. Well, talk to Annie. She’s due next month and needs a sitter.”

“Thank you, Kat. I knew you’d think of something!”

As soon as the call ended, Calista called Annie.

“I’ll get right to the point. I’m looking for a job. Katrina said you’re looking for a babysitter. Would you consider hiring me?”

Annie’s thoughts swirled. She thought getting a sitter would be a nightmare of interviewing and doing background checks and awfulness, and here, this lovely woman practically dropped in her lap.

“I will absolutely consider hiring you. Do you want to get together for coffee soon?”

“Yes, that would be great. Thank you so much, Annie. I’ve been meaning to get in touch anyway, to get to know you. This is even better.

“You can come here if you want to see Alphé’s house. It’s where I’d be with your baby most of the time.”

“Okay, that sounds like a plan. Wow, it’s so funny how things just have a way of working out. I’ve been so worried about finding a babysitter, and out of the blue you call. Are you sure about adding another human to your life?”

“Well, here’s the thing…”

Calista told her about being pregnant. Annie didn’t let on that she already knew, that Katrina had told her.

“Alphé must be overjoyed!”

“He doesn’t know, Annie. It’s not his. I’m going to wait a while longer before I tell him.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, Calista. Boy, it never ends, does it?”

“It really doesn’t. I can’t believe how stupid I am.”

“Calista, you’re not stupid. Please don’t say that. Katrina considers you a good friend, and she’s a snob. If you’re a friend of Katrina, you’re not stupid.”
