They walked down the alley to the parking lot behind the shops by the Cajun barn.

“How late are you?”

“I think about two months.”

“Oh, Maggie.”

“Yeah.”

She told her about Raven and Bubba’s explanation and Justin’s unfortunate public disclosure.

“Honey, you know he didn’t mean it that way.” She slid her arm around Maggie’s shoulder to hug.

“It opened up an entire conversation that I wish we would have had a long time ago. Grace and Amber heard Justin. Gus even came over this morning, worried about me. Trying to stay civil is taking all the energy I have.”

She unlocked the passenger door. “I can’t advise. My latest method of dealing with issues is avoidance, so I think I understand.”

Pulling the car out of the parking lot, she headed north on Main. “Do you want to stop by the house first?”

“Yes. I can’t wait to see it.”

Katrina parked in front because Luke Esprit’s truck was in the driveway.

“That’s not whose truck I think it is, is it?” Maggie asked, giggling.

“It is. But boy oh boy, not a smidgen of chemistry. Let than minus.”

“He sure doesn’t give off any vibes,” Maggie stated, but

impressed. “It’s going to be a wonderful place, Katrina. I’m so happy for you.”

“You don’t think it’s odd that I’m not living with Alphé?”

“No, I don’t. Maybe when his children are a little older and don’t need their mother to get them off to school, like in ten years.”

They laughed and high-fived. “I’m going to have to think about having a kid myself one of these days. We aren’t getting any younger.”

“I drank a lot over Christmas.”

“Don’t worry about that now. The most dangerous time is the last half of the first trimester, and you were abstaining for Lent. There’s nothing you can do about things that are in the past.”

“Thank god! I forgot about Lent.”

They got back in the car and headed north toward Saint John’s Parish.

“What does Justin have to say about all this?”

“I’m not telling him right away if it’s positive. To have this happen right after that hideous mess at the wild horse meeting,I can’t even. How embarrassing to have them joking about it, their comments about Bubba asking me if I was pregnant, and then everyone saying, ‘Oh yeah! Bubba was right!’ Ugh!”

“Okay, granted, it will be a story they won’t soon forget, but I’m not sure about not telling Justin.”

“Obviously, I’ll have to tell him eventually, but not right away. I want the situation to calm down. I was so mad at him I told him since he seemed to feel so strongly against it, he could be in charge of preventing it.”

“Oh, Maggie.”

“Yeah! Score another for me.”

Katrina patted her hand. “You’ve always been your own worst enemy.”
