“I wonder why that is.”

Walmart was up ahead.

“Oh god, here we are. The moment of truth.”

“I was just thinking that if you are, your baby will grow up with Annie’s.”

“Aw. That’s so nice. Something positive.”

“I’m sure there will be lots of positive things about it, Maggie.”

“I wish I weren’t such a jerk.”

“What are you talking about? You’re not a jerk.”

“I am. First Russ,” Maggie said, referring to her former husband, the guy who’d brought his mistress, Maggie’sfriend Claudia, on their honeymoon. “Now this.”

“Russ was the jerk, Maggie, not you. This situation doesn’t compare to what you went through with Russ. This is just a surprise that was announced by a horse. I’m hoping that if you are pregnant, by tonight you’ll be so excited that you’ll forget all about the scene at the wild horse meeting and tell Justin.”

“Don’t count on it. Now we’ve spent another hour of our lives talking about me when you’re the one with the excitement happening.”

“We take turns listening. It’s your turn.”

They got out of the car, and Maggie nabbed a cart as they walked toward the entrance.

“Okay, well, thank you. I’m trying so hard not to be a downer.”

“Honey, you’re not a downer. You just have an issue right now. It’s fine.”

The greeter said hello, and it made something well up in Maggie. “That could be my grandmother. Why is someone letting their eighty-year-old grandmother be a greeter at Walmart?”

“You can’t judge that. Maybe she needs the money and wants to get out of the house. Maybe she’s got an ornery husband at home, and this is her way of getting away from him.”

“Oh, great! Is that what we have to look forward to?” Maggie cried. “I would have stayed in Florida if that was the case!”

Katrina looked around, snickering, but no one seemed to notice her girlfriend was decompensating in the middle of Walmart. “Just relax. Where are the feminine hygiene products here? Anyway, do you think it’s any different in Florida? No. Just remember what romance was like there for us. Remember Kyle?”

“Oh my god,” Maggie sputtered, laughing. “You and Kyle. What a friggin’ joke.”

“Yeah, but if I remember correctly, you thought Kyle might be the one. You kept telling me he was perfect for me.”

“I rest my case. I’m a terrible judge of men.”

“Kyle and his wife and four kids. Yeah.”

They laughed out loud at the memory.

“I guess wehavedone better for ourselves here,” Maggie said, finally calming down.

“You definitely have. The jury is still out for me, though.”

“Forgive me?” Maggie asked.

“Completely. Here are the tests. I’ll buy one so you can go in the john right now and pee on it.”

“You’re nuts! I’m not doing a pregnancy test at Walmart!” Maggie shouted.

“Yes, you are. You think we’re driving home and then waiting for you to boat back to Bayou Cottage? Screw that.”
