They kissed when he joined her at the grill. She pointed to the corral.

“It’s still light,” she said. “You should saddle up poor Spooky and get her out for a bit. Her feelings were hurt when Dale got to go out and she had to stay all by herself.”

“Do you mind?”

“Justin, it was my idea. Go! I’ll get your dinner ready, and you can eat when you get back.”

He kissed her again. “How the hell did I get so lucky?”

“Yeah, you are pretty lucky,” she mumbled out of his earshot.

He went to the shed and led Spooky out of the corral. “Bareback, baby.”

“I’ll have an orgasm just watching you climb up,” she said, laughing.

“I don’t want to miss that!” he said, kissing her.

He went through the motions of climbing on the giant animal, delighting Maggie. Nothing else mattered at that moment; they were in the here and now. Justin waved to her, Spooky galloping around the back of the property to the trail that led to the rescue, away from where the wild horses dwelt.

Smiling, watching Justin take off put Maggie in that frame of mind she longed for, a little bit of what they’d had a few months ago at the beginning of their relationship.

There was no doubt about it, she was better with Justin. Back inside, she set the table, made a salad, and heated the potatoes from the night before. A last look in the mirror, she looked okay. She glanced out the window and watched just as Justin returned and put Spooky up for the night. Watching him perform the tasks of caring for his horse, the familiarity of his movements filled her with passion for him. But she knew how fragile it was, and fickle. She’d guard it tonight, only concentrate on the good.

He came inside and kissed her hello again. “Do I have time to shower?”

“Yes, go. I can warm up the meat.”

She puttered around waiting for him, and in ten minutes he was back. The fragrance of the soap he used filled her senses. “You smell good.”

“I didn’t ten minutes ago,” he said, kissing her again. “Wow, look at this spread.”

“Sit. It’s Friday night. I love Fridays. No wine, but it’s okay. Steak will take the place. Steak and cake.”

“Right!”

He held her chair out, and she sat. Heart sinking, she could tell by his expression he was eager to tell her something, and she wanted nothing, especially a confession aboutAmberto break the mood. Launching in before he could say anything, she went into detail about the morning horseback ride and her boat ride, about seeing Gus and being at Katrina’s, about her moment of self-actualization.

“Everything I have came flooding over me, how lucky I am to have you and my life. When I was at Katrina’s and saw her bunk room, I remembered that recently you talked about doing something like that in our attic for our family. And now here we are; it’s going to be necessary.”

It was just the right thing to say because he grabbed onto that and went into detail about the plans he had for their cottage. She told him about what Katrina had said about Mae Beaumont’s swamp farmhouse.

“Yeah, I’ve seen that firetrap. No, I have something a little slicker in mind,” he said.

They finished dinner, and he helped her clean up. “Do you want to dance tonight?”

“You mean here in our living room or out?”

“We can do it here,” he said, grinning. “It’ll end up in bed for you.”

“It must be my hormones because I’m ready when you are.”

Resting his chin on the top of her head, Justin held her and swayed a little bit side to side.

“I wonder how I got so lucky.”

“Justin, are you lucky?”

He looked into her eyes. “Am I lucky? Oh my god, I don’t even know where to begin. I’ve got a wonderful life. You’re giving me everything I want. I can’t wait for the baby now, too. Soon, let’s go shopping for nursery stuff. We need everything, and I want to buy it. I don’t want a lot of crappy shower gifts.”
