“How do you know they’ll be crappy?” she asked.

However, the answer would be the pin that would pop the balloon.

“Some women at the office once were talking about awful baby shower games. That’s all.”

Her heart sank when she realized it was probably Amber. He let her go and rubbed his chin. “I was going to say something before, but I didn’t want to wreck the mood.”

“Justin, don’t wreck it now. I don’t want to hear anything that will mess this up.”

He looked at her curiously but didn’t press her for details.

“Turn on the music so we can dance,” she said. “We’ll go shopping and buy all new baby stuff, okay? We’ll go dancing tomorrow night. Let’s fill the weekend with fun stuff. Anything that we don’t need to talk about, I vote to forget about now.”

“Okay, if you’re sure.”

“I’m more than sure.”

He reached for a vinyl record of Zydeco music that had been Maggie’s grandfather’s, and put it on the turntable.

“Ma lady,” he said, holding out his hand for Maggie.

The accordion and washboard, instruments made for each other, rang out. Her beautiful smile made his heart rate increase as she effortlessly moved into his arms, and they did the Cajun two-step around her living room on the worn rug. It was the perfect dance. Then the jitterbug, Maggie looked so sexy doing the jitterbug, her body made for that dance. Trying to distract himself with the music, it was impossible. He let go of her.

“I want to fuck you,” he said, shutting off the music.

“Fuck me, then,” she replied, looking into his eyes with a sultry smile.

He unzipped and lifted her up off the ground, Maggie wrapping her legs around his waist.

“Are you happy now?” she whispered, holding his face.

“Delirious.”

On the highway to Yogi Bear Campground, Austin and Calista were having a great time, music playing, the kids on the couches, buckled in with seatbelts, each with their own electronics with earbuds in place.

“I still can’t believe you did this,” Calista said, turning around to look at them.

He’d bought six iPads. Six. She didn’t know for sure how much he’d spent, but it had to be a lot just for the electronics. When they were in the checkout with all the things they’d bought Thursday night, he wouldn’t let her see the amount he’d spent.

“Look, I know we have to have rules about their use, but we have two hours to get there tonight. It’s like a babysitter. It’s their birthday presents this year.”

“Alphé started crying.”

“Yeah, that was weird. It made me feel bad.”

“He was dumbfounded. He couldn’t do that for his kids. I think Katrina would have eventually, but their relationship is new, too. Look what you did for me, and we’ve known each other a week.”

“I’ve looked forward to this all week. And I really don’t have any expectations. I can get stung by a bee or bitten by a snake; I’m still thrilled.”

At ten that night, they pulled into the campground. The smell of campfires and children laughing, well past their usual bedtime, got the kids’ attention.”

“How do you want to do this?” Calista asked.

“Why doesn’t everyone pile out, and I’ll plug in, and you can do what you want inside. Ask the older to watch the younger.”

It worked out perfectly; Austin had experimented with the hookups before and knew how they worked. They pushed a button, and the slide-outs doubled the inside space.
