“I see your favorite person is here.”

“Why am I being such a bitch? I thought I had resolved all those feelings weeks ago.”

“That shit comes and goes. Stop being so hard on yourself. Is that what you wanted to talk to me about?”

“I’m pregnant.”

Annie grabbed her. “No, you are not!”

“I am. Please keep it secret. I’m still processing everything. I saw your doctor on Thursday, and she made me feel like crap because I’d been drinking. I didn’t realize I was pregnant, or I never would have.”

“Yeah, she did the same thing to me. She’ll calm down.” Annie hugged her, in disbelief. “She later told me it’s the second half of the first trimester that is most crucial. When are you due?”

“Mid-September.”

“There you go!” Annie said, hugging her. “You’re fine, and your baby will be fine. The horse knew!”

“Get this, Katrina wants to get pregnant now, too.”

“She didn’t tell me!”

“Call her. It’s no secret,” Maggie replied. “She’s been so busy with the move.”

“There’s a whole other story now,” Annie said. “Something about the guy Calista is seeing.”

“Not that guy from the Bureau of Land Management who was here?” Maggie asked

“Yes, that very one,” Annie answered. “He’s turned out to be a piece of work.”

“Let me get away with my dog. I’ll call her. You call her about the other matter. I’m on overload right now.”

“Congratulations, my sweet friend,” Annie said, kissing her.

“I’m not sweet right now. I’m pretty sour, as a matter of fact. We need to talk. I think I’m losing my mind.”

“Okay, Maggie. You know I think you have the perfect life, and mine is a piece of shit.”

“Well, stop it, Annie. You don’t know how wrong you are.”

“Call Katrina,” Annie said.

“I’m going to lock myself in the bedroom and call her right now.”

She waved and took off with her dog. There was no way she could avoid the men, who were finally working, so she just waved with that big smile plastered on her face and hightailed it into the cottage. Justin watched her, concerned, but left her alone.

Up in the bedroom with the door closed, she keyed in Katrina’s number.

“Tell me about Calista!” Maggie said. “And expect a call from Annie aboutyou know what. Could it have happened yet?”

“Ha! Not quite. But maybe in a week I’ll have something to share. I want our kids to grow up together, just like we did.”

Unbidden tears escaped Maggie’s eyes, cruising down her cheeks as she listened to Katrina’s plans for their babies. Katrina wasn’t even pregnant yet and already had their children going to the same school.

“Annie’s baby will be in the same grade. We’ll make her hold the kid back and wait for ours.”

“You’ve got it all figured out,” Maggie said, sniffing.

“Honey, what’s wrong?”
