“I just need to get through this day. Tell me more so I stop with the self-absorption. Annie said Calista’s guy was pulling something.”

“Oh, you won’t believe this.”

She repeated the story of Austin telling Alphé’s younger children about their paternity.

“That’s grounds for murder,” Maggie retorted. “Finally! A place to direct my wrath.”

“Calista is so upset. He’s like the perfect guy except he’s an asshole about Alphé.”

“What else could he direct at Alphé? The guy’s done nothing but fish all his life.”

“I think he’s jealous,” Katrina said.

“Okay, well, I guess I can see that. They definitely have something in common. You know, Justin doesn’t like the guy at all. He was actually unreasonable about it. I wonder if there isn’t something underlying, like maybe he carried a torch for Calista in high school.”

“The only problem is that the guy is head over heels, and now she’s through with him.”

“Hopefully, he won’t be a jackass and will leave her alone.”

“Something tells me it won’t be that easy. You know, I hope you get to know her better, Mags. She’s really a great gal.”

“I’ll make a point of it if I ever get out of this mood.”

“Aw, honey, you’re your own worst enemy.”

“You said that the last time we were together.”

“Because it’s true. Should I come there?”

“I’ll meet you at the dock if you don’t want to get that fancy car muddy.”

“Meet me! Twenty minutes?”

“Twenty.”

She hung up and ran down the steps to tell Justin. He was in a two-foot-deep trench, covered in sweat, looking hot in every way. When she waved to get his attention, he stopped, wiping his brow with his arm. At the edge of the trench, she squatted to give him a kiss.

“I’m all sweaty.”

“Yikes! Maybe you should put a shirt on, Justin. You’ll have an audience when the women return from the rescue.”

“What do you care? I’m in your bed tonight and no one else’s.”

“Yeah! Eat your heart out, bitches!”

“Where you goin’?”

“Picking up Kat from the dock. Brulee is coming with me.”

“See you.” He winked at her with his mouth open, and she burst out laughing. He wanted to say,Be careful, mother of my child. Come back to me.

“What?” She looked down at him in the hole, the shovel over his shoulder. But he just shook his head, so she squatted down again and put her ear to his mouth. “Tell me.”

He repeated it in a whisper. “Be careful, mother of my child. Come back to me.”

Melting, she nodded at him, reaching out to kiss him on the mouth.

“There’s no fog today, so no worries.”
