“Wow. I want to see them tonight. What do you think?”

“What about our date?”

“That will be it,” he said, grinning down at her.

“Let’s see how the day goes. It’s been so weird lately, you could go to jail for murder, and your girlfriend and Austin will stalk me.”

Hands dropping at his sides, he laughed out loud. “Talk about a killjoy.”

“Ha! I’m sorry. I’m trying to be a realist. I already jumped into one relationship this month. I don’t want to ruin what we have. Anyway, are you going to get in touch with Katrina?”

“I already did. She was fully supportive of you being here last night.”

“But you didn’t tell her you want to sleep with me.”

“No, not yet. I won’t put it quite that way.”

“What should I do if she comes here this morning?”

“That’s not her routine. Katrina is the most predictable person I’ve ever met. I’ll see you later.” He bent down to kiss her lips, and they were nice; he could smell her familiar smell, baby powder and fruity shampoo. Lola used to say Calista and her children smelled like fruit salad, and when Alphé smelled the strawberry scent, he smiled.

“I’ll be back to say goodbye to the kids,” he said, opening the door. He looked at her one more time and winked.

It would take some getting used to, but having Calista in his house and his bed was a no-brainer. He didn’t need an intellectual or someone who made a lot of money. He needed a wife. Remembering he’d asked Katrina to pay Calista for babysitting, he’d have to reverse that decision.

Shortly after he left, his ex-wife got dropped off by her boyfriend. Calista met her at the door.

“I have news,” she said, answering Lola’s confused look.

She gave her the quick version of Austin Macon, the threats, and then the faux pas with the children.

“How’d the kids take it?”

“About like you’d expect. Alphé did a great job though. You’ll see. He said Rodney was their birth father, but he was their real dad.”

Biting her tongue, all the emotions one would expect, along with the guilt slammed Lola.

“I never apologized to you,” Lola said.

“Thank you. It’s over. You’re forgiven. I’m stepping out of bounds here, but how would you feel if Alphé and I hooked up?”

A wave of heat rolled over her body. Lola wasn’t jealous of Katrina. Katrina would never be Alphé’s equal, and she’d never be his wife. But Calista might be, and if she shared Alphé’s bed, he’d find out what he’d been missing all those years.

“Is that a possibility?”

“I’m not sure. It would make life easier.”

Lola turned away, thinking. “I’ll do what I can to support you. It will be different.”

“I know. It might not come to anything.”

“I take it you’ve discussed it, then.”

“Lola…”

“Right. I’m sorry. Curiosity and all that. I guess I’d better wake up the kids.”

“Mine are in there, too,” Calista said, smiling.
