“Okay, well, that sounds reasonable. At least you didn’t have to do it.”

“Right, that’s what I decided. So this morning, I went to church, early, and he was on his way to the dock when I pulled out of the parking lot.”

“Did he stop?”

“He did. And he told me he wants to give a relationship with Calista a try.”

She pulled into the drive-thru. “What do you want?”

“A double double with cheese, hush puppies, fries, onion rings, and a chocolate shake.”

Katrina flared her nostrils. “No pie?”

“Yes, a fried peach pie.”

Laughing, Katrina gave the order, adding a diet Coke.

“I don’t believe it. You and Alphé are perfect together.”

At the next window, Katrina paid for her girlfriend’s lunch. “I forgot money.”

“It’s okay. I owe you a lot of meals.

“We looked good together, but honestly, the drama was getting to me. We finally saw each other naked for the first time Friday night, and I was thinking maybe that rang the death knell.”

“Stop it, Katrina. You’re gorgeous.”

“Sex was always an afterthought with him. What else can it be when you have four children and work eighty hours a week?”

“So you give him to Calista. That was a peaceful transition.”

At the next window, Katrina got the food and handed it over. “I’ll park by the gazebo.”

She drove past the marina to a big public park that was empty at the present time since school was still in session. The river was wide here and ran fast into the bay.

Arranging her food, Maggie offered Katrina an onion ring, and she took it. “Why do I have the feeling there’s much more going on?”

“I don’t even know how to tell you this,” Katrina said, bowing her head. She burst into tears again, despondent. Maggie reached her hand up to Katrina’s shoulder and petted her.

“Kat, it can’t be that bad.”

“It’s bad. And it’s breaking my heart.”

“Oh no.”

Maggie looked out the window, hoping her friend wasn’t sick, that there wasn’t some life-and-death thing going on. She put her food on the dashboard and moved over to hug Katrina.

“Please tell me. Did you go to the doctor this week? Are you sick?”

Katrina grabbed her hand. “Sweet Maggie, nothing like that. I had called the sheriff for Calista, earlier when Austin first harassed her. Dave Chastain answered the phone. He was kind, but there was a little teasing going on. He actually called Austin a douchebag.”

“Oh god, leave it to Dave.”

“But then later, he came to my house.”

“Dave came to your house. Did you let him in?”

“I did more than let him in. And it was wonderful. And then he came back this morning.”
