They looked at each other.

“So it wasn’t a one-night stand.”

“No.”

Katrina cried again, and Maggie stretched over to hold her, shocked. Shaking her head a little like she did, Maggie tried to get some feeling in her brain.

“See, it’s okay now because Alphé and Calista conveniently hooked up,” Maggie said, evaluating. “It could have been ugly. But he saved the day.”

“Yes, that was lucky.”

“But there’s another matter,” Maggie warned. “A mentallyillmatter with huge boobs who carries a knife.”

“Amber carries a knife?”

“She does. And if you could have seen my kitchen after she got done throwing everything in my fridge all over the floor, you’d know that she’s certifiably crazy. Kat, she sat on horseback and watched Justin and me having sex down by the dock.”

“Yeah, I must have blocked that.”

“Okay, tell me everything.”

“It started out that we decided we wanted to have an affair. We wanted each other, and we just wanted to be together when it was possible. But after we did it,” Katrina cried again, “we realized there’s more than just sex going on. And then when I told him Alphé ended it with me, he’s feeling a little overwhelmed like he wants to end it with Amber. We love each other.”

Maggie grabbed Katrina’s hand and then pulled her closer to hug. “This is awful, but it’s so wonderful. I said that you could be my sister-in-law. I never really believed it, but it’s possible now. What are you going to do?”

“I told him to take his time. He’s in lust right now. The thing is, when we talk, he’s so interesting; we can talk all night. We have nothing in common.”

“It’s testosterone. It’s what Justin and I have. Around here, it’s all you need.”

“I hope you’re right.” She looked out over the river. “I’m taking it minute by minute.”

“Why the tears?”

“Because I want to be with him. I’m even jealous of Amber now. It makes me sick thinking of him having sex with her.”

“Try not to think of it,” Maggie said, flaring her nostrils. “I’ve been there, and it’s difficult.”

“Right! You know just what I mean. Insane women supposedly make the best bed partners.”

“Remember Lorena Bobbitt,” Maggie said.

“Oh my God! How awful. Maybe he’d better not break up with her.”

“Do you want him to stay with someone he doesn’t love because he’s afraid of her?”

“I’m not sure Dave doesn’t love Amber. We haven’t talked about it. I don’t want to put pressure on him.”

“Oh, I get it. The oasis theory, that if you make your presence a stress-free zone, he’ll keep coming back. Kinda like what Claudia did for Russ.”

Claudia was an old friend of Maggie, Annie and Katrina, who made a play for Maggie’s fiancé, and he ended up falling in love with her, even bringing her on his honeymoon with Maggie.

Katrina grabbed her friend’s hand. “I didn’t want to tell you. You think I’m awful.”

“No, I don’t. But fight fair. If you need to know what he’s doing, tell him.”

“Okay, if it comes to that, I will. You said the sheriff was at the cottage. Does the man ever sleep?”

“It was a deputy. Hopefully, now, while Amber is at the rescue he’ll sleep.”
