Instead of going home, Dave stopped in at his father’s house and took a nap in his old bedroom. He got a text from Amber.

Are you ever coming home?

He sent her a return text.I stopped by my dad’s house after yet another emergency call. I was falling asleep at the wheel. I’m going to nap here for a while and come to the apartment to change before my shift starts tonight.

Reading it, her inner radar kicked in. Their apartment wasn’t that far from his father’s house. It was early afternoon. Take a nap and come home to sleep. But no, he was going to come to theapartment, not home, to change.

She called him. “What’s going on, Dave? Just come home, for God’s sake.”

“Amber, please. I’ve been up for twenty-four hours.”

“Then you should be home in bed.”

“I’m hanging up now.”

“Dave.”

But he’d hung up.

Chapter 9

Easter was right around the corner. One night Justin came home to Bayou Cottage with an enormous box in the back of his pickup truck.

“What is it?” Maggie asked.

“A surprise. Close your eyes. There’s a picture on the box.”

She did as he said, sitting on the porch, listening to him grunt as he struggled with the heavy object.

“Jeez, I hope it’s worth it,” Maggie called out.

“You’ll thank me on Saturday.”

The screen door opened, and she heard cardboard sliding across her original cypress floors.

“Don’t scratch the floor!”

“It’s on a rug. Okay, come in.”

She walked through the door and wasn’t sure what she was looking at at first. “Is it a dorm fridge?”

They’d talked about getting one for the nursery so she could store her breast milk after pumping without going downstairs to the kitchen.

Then she saw the company’s name and burst out laughing. “Winecooler.com. Really, Justin?” She stuck her almost-four-month-along pregnant belly out and circled it with her hand like a game show host showing off a prize. “Remember this? You’ll be drinking alone until September.”

“Aw! I’m sorry. Boy, talk about insensitive! I’ve got a couple of cases of Fleur de Pompom coming tomorrow.”

“Where’s it going?” she asked.

“I thought I’d put it in the pantry if it was okay with you.”

“The pantry’s fine. But don’t you want your friends to see it when they visit? It’s a status symbol to have a wine cooler, isn’t it?”

“You’re thinking of a wine cellar.”

“Oh, right.” She stood on her toes to kiss him. “What would you like for dinner tonight?”

“What are my choices?”
