Shaking, Katrina had to pull over. Lowering her head to the steering wheel, she gasped for breath, her body heaving.

“Honey, what’s wrong?” Calista cried, quickly forgetting about her own pain.

“I’m sure I’m pregnant. I thought it was Alphé’s.”

Looking straight ahead, Calista frowned. “Maybe his vas didn’t work. Are you doing it with anyone else?”

“Yes.”

“Kat, who?”

“I can’t tell you. Not yet anyway. It’s someone I’ve been seeing for a while, since Alphé broke up with me to live with you.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Calista said, cringing.

“It’s fine, you didn’t me a favor. We were going to try to just leave it as is, you know, an affair? But we fell in love with each other. He’s with another woman though.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” Calista repeated. “I feel partially to blame.”

“You’re not, Calista, trust me. This guy swept me off my feet. I would have betrayed Alphé if I had to.”

Driving for a while, they thought of the impact of their situation. “If you’re pregnant, and I’m pregnant, we’re all pregnant,” Calista replied. “Annie, Maggie, you and me. You generously included me in your club, and now I’m not sure how appreciative I am.”

They arrived to a packed parking lot on a Saturday afternoon. “When you texted me and asked me to go to Walmart, I knew right away what it was for.”

“Why?” Calista asked, mystified.

“I needed to go for the same thing. Maggie had asked me to take her when she suspected she might be,you know.”

“So it’s like a tradition.”

“Ugh, but yes,” Katrina replied. “We have to do the test in Walmart, too.”

“No way! I’ve never been in a Walmart bathroom,” Calista said, laughing.

Going into the store, the greeter smiled at them and said, “Have an exciting day!”

“I’m glad someone is happy.”

In the personal products aisle, Katrina picked the brand Maggie had used. “This one is dependable,” she said, handing the box to Calista.

The women exchanged glances and laughed out loud. “I’ll go pay. Take this, and I’ll meet you outside the bathroom.”

After peeing on the sticks, they met. “Are congratulations in order?” Katrina asked.

“I guess it depends on your perspective. You have a deer-in-the-headlights look, so I guess it’s yes for you, too.”

“What the fuck.” Katrina barked out a laugh. “What’s Alphé gonna say?”

“I have no idea. He knew I had been screwing that maniac when he asked me to move in.”

“Are you going to tell him?”

“Austin? Oh hell no.”

“I don’t know why I’m laughing. I’m not telling Da—oops, I almost said it. I’m not telling him yet. I need to think about it for a while. You’re the only person who knows. I’m sorry for putting you on the spot. I trust you, Calista.”

“It’s okay. You have put up with our drama since Mardi Gras. It’s my turn to give back.”
