“I’ve never been pregnant.”

“Aw. Your first,” she said, hugging Katrina. “I’m happy for you.”

“Calista, thank you. Poor little baby. I thought being a single parent was doable. I was so cavalier about it, too.”

“You’ll be fine. I’ll help you. Annie and Maggie will learn the ropes, too. You’ll see.”

“I’ll need a doctor.”

Calista got out her phone. “I’ll send you a link to mine. She’s great.”

They left the store without shopping, minds racing about their shared predicament. Wondering how on earth she would take care of a third child, Calista felt numb and slightly shocked. With her focus on Dave, Katrina didn’t think yet of the impact a baby would have on her job. Cells divided within the women’s bodies and would be dealt with in a matter of months.

Alphé’s house came into view. “Well, another bonding experience,” Katrina said. “I hope that’s it for a while.”

“I’ll text you later.”

“Are you going to tell Alphé right away?”

“No. It’s not his, so why even add that intrigue to the chaos. I probably should have bought something since I said I was going to Walmart. Oh well.”

“Just say they were out of whatever it was.”

Driving the two blocks to her cottage, Katrina’s mind whirled. Dave might be happy or furious, she didn’t know for sure. What kind of guy was he? Over the last few weeks, their situation had gotten dire. Being away from Katrina was taking a toll on Dave, and each day away from her made it easier to end it with Amber. And he was going to do it that day.

When she pulled into the driveway, he was already there, the sight of his truck in her garage speeding her heart rate up to the heart attack zone.

Parking next to his truck, she took a last look in the rearview mirror. The positive pee stick was in the wrapper in her purse like a living thing, demanding to be acknowledged.

He’d let himself inside and had spent the past half hour filling the drawers she’d given him with his clothes. He’d already stashed suitcases in the attic. Boxes from Spencer’s bakery stacked on the kitchen island contained all her favorite goodies. The fridge was full of deli food.

The sound of her car got his attention, and he closed the refrigerator door. When he saw her, his heart did a little jump.

Grinning, she pointed to the garage. “Quick, close the door.”

The garage door remote was on the counter, and he pressed the button so the door would close, hiding his truck.

Katrina couldn’t help it, throwing herself at Dave. Their lips met, and he picked her up, lifting her into the house.

“You’re here,” she said, full of emotion, caressing the back of his neck with her hand, the already familiar feeling.

“I am. I couldn’t take it another second. I hope you’re okay with it.”

“How did it happen?”

“Are you sure you want to hear this?”

“I’m sure.”

He put her down, and she pointed to the island with the boxes and laughed. “You’re going to make me fat.”

“I want you good and fat,” he said, squeezing her rear end. Thinking, you’ll be getting your wish sooner than you knew, she didn’t tell him about the baby.

Kissing him again, she took his hand and led him into the living room. “Sit and tell me.”

Dave wasn’t even seeing Katrina yet, but they kept running into each other; at the store, and café, he even stopped her on the street. Amber knew something was up within a week of his involvement with Katrina. The first clue? He stopped sleeping with Amber. Out of the blue, he went on night shift.

“You’re the chief. Why do you need to work nights?”
