“Alphé did?”

“Correct. It’s my friend who’s living with him now, you know, the one who had to file a restraining order against that guy from the BLM. We’d gone to Walmart together to get pregnancy tests and did the tests there.”

“You did a pregnancy test at Walmart?”

“Yes, in the bathroom.”

His face was hard to read, but she saw a touch of concern there, and that made her heart sink.

“What’s the verdict? Is he going to be a father of two babies from two different women?”

“No. Her baby daddy is Austin Macon. And mine is you.”

She gently poked him in the chest with her finger. They made eye contact, and as she embraced him, she saw his expression; confusion.

“I’m sorry. I don’t get it,” Dave replied, stiffening up a little bit.

“We’re going to have a baby, Dave,” she said, looking up at him.

There was a pause, his eyebrows down, frowning, and she could sense the wheels turning. It made her want to laugh, but she held it together, not wanting to insult Dave.

“You and me?” he asked, grabbing on to her upper arms, surprised at how thin her arms were. Fragile, but strong. She stopped walking.

“You and me,” she answered, looking him right in the eye. “I hope to god you aren’t mad or disappointed.”

“No way! It just has to sink in. If we’re having a baby together, you’re stuck with me, then.”

He was suddenly too emotional to go on, and pulled Katrina to his body, kissing her head, smoothing her back. “I guess it was pretty irresponsible of me to have unprotected sex,” he said when he could talk again.

“I’m healthy,” she said. “You won’t get anything from me.”

“I am too. I guess I thought you must take the pill or something.”

“Ha! Like a diaphragm? No, I was just as irresponsible. Do you feel like I trapped you?”

“Not at all. We sure don’t waste any time. Are you going to make your deadline?”

“Not exactly, but they’ll wait for me.” Squeezing his hand, a little doubt crept in. “I know having a baby just doubled our adjustment quota. I’ll be fat in no time. The baby’s things will crowd our house. We’ll have a nanny.”

“A nanny? I’ll take care of the kid while you’re away.”

“Yeah, but you need to get some sleep. And I was hoping you’d go on day shift.”

“I’ll switch tomorrow if you want. But when we have a baby, I’ll make the sacrifice.”

“I’m not sure I want to sacrifice having you in my bed. We’ll figure it out. We’ll find someone you trust.”

She thought it amazing that they shared their fears and concerns, and after only five minutes of knowing he was going to be a father, he was already rearranging his life for the good of the kid.

“Wow. You’re really something, you know that?”

“You are, too,” he said, feeling a little numb. The wordbabyfloated through his mind, attaching it to every word they said to each other.Baby.

“I never even lived with a guy before.”

“No way. A girl like you should have had a lineup to choose from.”

“I never even thought about it before now. I didn’t need to share my space. I’m not scared to be lonely. Isn’t that the reason most couples stay together after the expiration date?”
