“I’ll have to think about that one,” he said, chuckling. He looked down at her, grinning. “Why’d you change your mind with me?”

As they walked through the cypress trees, she threaded her arm around his waist. “You’re my person. You complete me. I need you here with me.”

“I’m as lucky as hell, then. I don’t want to get in your way though.”

“I’ll be fine sharing my space with you. We’ll work on making a place for you when we get home. I’m thinking of one of those two other bedrooms downstairs. One will be baby Chastain’s, the other his daddy’s.”

“What if she’s a girl?” Dave asked.

“I don’t care what we have.”

“Me either. I still can’t believe it. Are you ready to go home?”

“Yes. I wish I were working from home this week. I guess it’ll be okay. You’ll have time to settle in without my opinions.”

“I value your opinion. What if I take up too much space?”

“Not possible. You can have whatever you want. If you have a question, we’ll talk. I’m already thinking about converting that space above the garage into my office.”

“You have that beautiful bunk room, too.”

“It’ll be full of all our kids someday,” Katrina said.

“I can’t even imagine it. Ha!” Dave said, the first anxiety creeping in. “There I am again, not able to look too far ahead.”

“That’s okay. I’ve got enough plans for ten people.”

They reached the car, and he opened the door for her, watching her pulling her legs in. She looked up at him staring at her.

“What?” she asked.

“Nothing. I just love you.”

She took his hand. “I love you, too.”

“I’m a little scared.”

“Well, get in and let’s talk.”

He closed the door and walked around the car, wondering why he was being such a weasel. He didn’t want to scare her away.

Navigating out of the French Quarter back onto the highway, they held hands while addressing his fears.

“I hope you don’t regret getting involved with me,” she said, concerned.

“Never. When I first saw you at Maggie’s Twelfth Night party, I admit I felt something for you. But I was with Amber, and I thought it was just a guy thing, you see a pretty girl, and she’s with someone else, so you let it go.

“But I kept thinking about you, I asked Justin about you whenever I saw him, and he’d tell me what you were up to. It sounded like you were pretty devoted to Alphé Beaumont.”

“What did you think about that?”

“Do you want the truth?”

“Of course. Even if it hurts.”

“I don’t want to piss you off.”

“Ha! No worries. What did you think about me and Alphé together?”
