“If you stick around, you’ll be on the back of one every weekend,” Justin said.

“Do you ride, Dave?” Chris asked.

“Ha! He was almost born on one,” Justin said.

“I ride, but I don’t have much time to do it,” Dave answered. “If I lived out here, I’d be on horseback daily.”

“Do you ride a lot, Justin?”

“Every chance I get. Do you want to get on?”

“Sure.”

“Let’s go,” Justin said. “You can have Dale, Chris. Dave, do you want Spooky? I’ve got a boarder here, too, Penelope, and she’s a little rambunctious.”

“I’ll take Penelope. If history repeats itself, Spooky might take me on a tour I don’t want to go on.”

The men laughed, saddling the horses. Chris did well with direction from his brothers, and before long, the three brothers were headed back on the trail which led through the woods for the first of many rides to come.

Dave and Katrina’s ride back to town was full of lively conversation with Angela’s observations of the other parents and kids.

“Davie is a leader,” she said. “I hope it’ll stay that way. He only has to make a move and the others are following him.”

“I hope so, too,” Dave said. “I hope it in a good way, not that he’ll lead them to trouble. That fence my brother erected was a joke. Davie got over it in one high jump.”

“There you go! Maybe he’ll do track.”

“I’m going to start training him now,” Dave said, laughing.

“Annie’s son called Chris Dada,” Angela said conspiratorially. “Serves his jerk father right.”

“It’s his loss,” Katrina said. “Did anyone have any news about Bridget and Luke?”

“Chris said she’ll be home from Afghanistan before the holidays, if all goes well,” Dave said.

Chris stayed in touch with her frequently, Dave and Justin not as much but they hoped to get to know her once she was stateside again.

Dave dropped Angela off at Alphé’s house and he was finally able to do what he’d longed to do. He took Katrina’s hand and kissed it. “We can never have live-in help.”

“No, never. But she wore Davie out today! This kid is going to sleep like the dead tonight. We can make up for lost time.”

“I’m ready. It seems like it’s been a while,” Dave said.

“Well, not really. A couple of days.”

“I’m pretty sure it’s been longer than that.”

He squirmed in his seat, pulling at the crotch of his jeans, and Katrina laughed out loud.

“I’ll tell you what. I will take care of that tonight in ways you could only dream about in the light of day.”

“Watch it, girlfriend. I’m going to get in a crash.”

“I love our life,” Katrina said, sighing. “This is exactly what I would have hoped for. A wonderful guy, a great kid, friends, and our house.”

“The house is vital,” Dave said. “I can’t imagine any of this taking place in any other cottage.”
