“Is that the law?” she asked.

“No, it’s me.”

“Wow,” she said, her emotions going a little crazy. “I’ll go, then.”

He was dying to duck down and kiss her but withheld it. She looked up at him and then reached for the ignition and started the car.

“Goodbye, Dave.”

“Bye, Katrina. Have a safe trip. See you around.”

This time she winked. “Maybe.” She drove off, leaving him laughing in the middle of the road.

Watching Dave while he worked on the barn intrigued Katrina, giving her a full assessment of his physical attributes. The brothers were both tall and brawny. You could tell they were brothers but they had distinctive differences. Dave’s hair was thicker and his features were finer; Justin could have been a prize fighter and Dave a poet.

And their styles were opposing; Justin was loaded with ink, some of it disappearing below his waistband which left more to the imagination. Dave didn’t have tatts; it wasn’t forbidden by the sheriff’s department, but it wasn’t encouraged. Thick, dark unruly hair that curled if he didn’t keep it short enough covered Dave’s head, and there was always a lock of it over his forehead.

With impossibly broad shoulders, an even flatter stomach, and muscular thighs that made her weak in the knees, he walked like she would expect a sheriff to walk, with a commanding presence. And when he had unloaded fifty-pound bags of concrete out of the delivery truck, she tried not to stare at him; he didn’t even falter picking them up to carry on his shoulder.

Maggie elbowed her. “You’re staring at Dave.”

“Oh my God. How can I not?”

“You said that about Alphé,” she replied, laughing. “And don’t forget the crazy-ass girlfriend.”

“I thought you liked Amber.”

“I trusted her with my dog, but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t kill you if you made a play for her boyfriend.”

“I’m just looking. I’mtryingto like Alphé.”

“But you could be with my future brother-in-law,” Maggie whispered. “We’d be related.”

“You’re making me nervous.”

“Kat, are you really committed to Alphé?”

“Alphé’s available, and he expects nothing. He’s up at five, unconscious by nine. We’ve had sex about five times since we’ve been together, and half of those times were quickies before he conked out. He’s gone fourteen hours a day and has four kids he’s devoted to. The thing is, I like it like that. I like my space, and I have it with Alphé.”

She looked at Dave and licked her lips, standing. “However, I’m going to go say hi.”

“Kat, be careful.”

“I will. Come with me so it’s not so obvious.”

“You’re playing with fire.”

“The girlfriend isn’t around, right?”

“I haven’t seen her today but that doesn’t mean she’s not lurking somewhere, ready to attack.”

Dave watched Katrina out of the corner of his eye while he worked. Katrina Blanchard was physically his female ideal. She was tall and strong with a headful of red curls that she’d tied up in a ponytail, so she looked like a teenager. When Maggie called his name, he stopped short, unable to take his eyes off Katrina. He realized he was holding his breath.

“Dave!”

Maggie brought her friend over. “Dave, remember Katrina?”
