“I hope not.”

“You’d better put your car in the garage.”

She watched him leave and get into the car and pull it up past the cottage to park next to hers. For a long time, for years, Katrina had been alone. She’d met Alphé the first day she’d arrived in Cypress Cove. He’d ticked off all of her boxes until he didn’t.

And now here she was with a wonderful man, knowingly going to cheat on Alphé.

Watching as he walked through the door, she was going to do it. She wanted Dave. She wanted him for more than a lover. But right now, she’d settle for what he would give her.

“Ready or not,” she whispered, reaching for his hand.

“I’m ready.” He pulled her gently over, embracing her.

With her body along the length of his, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

“No regrets?” she asked.

“No. I want to tell you, I’m not usuallythat guy.”

“Me either. I mean I’m not that woman.”

There was only one moment when she wondered if she shouldn’t stop right away—when they passed the white-painted staircase that led up to the bunkhouse. That was where Alphé’s children would sleep when they came to her house. It was still the plan.

She didn’t plan to fall in love with Dave Chastain, but it felt right, being with him.

In her bedroom, she switched on the light on the bedside table.

“I need to shower,” she said. “Do you want to join me?”

The blood rushed to his groin so quickly he grabbed on to the doorjamb to keep from falling over, biting his lip so he didn’t laugh out loud.

“Okay.” He unbuckled his holster. “Do you have a safe place where I can stash my weapon?”

Opening the upper drawer of a highboy against the wall, she pointed. “That can be your drawer.” She watched him place the holster with the gun still in it into the drawer.

She reached for the light switch in the bathroom. They undressed, standing close, but not touching each other. He stood in front of her and unzipped.

“The moment of truth for every guy. Do I live up?”

Dave was a young guy, younger than she’d ever dated before, and everything he did charmed her, even his self-deprecating mocking.

“Let me be the judge of that,” she said.

He chuckled, leaning against the wall with one hand while he pulled his right leg out of the jean leg, then switched and pulled the left leg out. “Ta-da!”

Stripped down to her bra and panties, Katrina shook her head, staring at him. “I won’t be able to answer that until the underpants come off.” She pointed.

That wasn’t actually true. He was already hard, and it was huge.

“You need to catch up to me.”

“If I take my bra off, then we’ll be equal?”

“For now. But let me take it off.”

“Okay, I guess.” She wasn’t a shy girl, but at that moment, sadly, she wished she were better, younger, thinner. It made her sad that she didn’t believe she was good enough. Keeping her focus on what Dave did would help forget about herself.

She closed her eyes and stood as still as a statue. He came closer. She could smell him, hair gel and toothpaste and fabric softener, and that added to the appeal. His big, warm hands rested on her shoulders, fingers hooking the bra straps and pulling them slowly down over her arms. Her breasts sort of sprang out, giving her chills.
