“What are you going to tell Alphé?”

“He just flagged me down when I was coming out of church to tell me he and Calista are going to hook up.” For some reason, the confession made her laugh out loud.

“His late brother’s wife?” Dave asked.

“Yes. Can I tell you how relieved I am?”

He hugged her, kissing her neck. “I am so relieved. I didn’t think I could handle you seeing him.”

“I know. I felt that way about you and Amber.”

“I stopped having sex with her weeks ago, and I’ll never sleep with her again. If it’s okay with you, I’m going to sleep here for a while this morning, and then I’ll go to the apartment and pack up.” He took her by the arms and looked into her eyes. “Are you sure about this?”

“I’ve never been surer,” she said. “I already love you. I love you so much.”

As she kissed him again, there was an urgency of love, a need to make him understand that she was his unconditionally.

“I love you, too, Katrina. Now we have to get through you traveling this week,” he said, hugging her. “It’s going to be rough.”

“We have today,” she said. “I work from home today and leave tomorrow for three days. Then we’ll have all weekend.”

She took his hand and led him to the bedroom again. “Will you lie down with me?” he whispered, kissing her neck.

Nodding, she undressed, knowing his eyes were on her. When she was naked, she smiled at him. “Here we go.”

They got into bed together for the second time in twenty-four hours.

At noon, Dave got up, disoriented, but it didn’t take him long to remember where he was. He looked at his watch. Amber had classes and clinical from eleven a.m. until six p.m. so he had a window of time to pack up and get out of the shared apartment with no confrontations. He didn’t even care if it was cruel of him.

After dressing, he opened the bedroom door and heard a male voice, obviously coming from a speaker. Katrina was on a Zoom call, her computer open on the counter. With makeup, hair done, and a nice shirt, he saw sweatpants and fuzzy slippers out of sight of the participants. She waved and put up her finger, mouthingone minute.

“Guys, I’ll be right back,” she said, stroking keys.

“Are you taking off?” she asked Dave.

“Yes, going to pack. I’ll be back in a couple of hours.”

“Do you want a coffee to go?”

“No, you go back to your meeting. I’ll get one on the way.”

He kissed her and left from the side door.

Amber had known there was something up within a week of Dave’s infatuation with Katrina. The first clue? He stopped having sex with her. Out of the blue, he went on night shift.

“You’re the chief. Why do you need to work nights?”

“Just doing my part, giving the others a break,” he said, not even bothering to lie to her.

They never did it again, after having an active sex life for months. She told her sister it was like being beat over the head with a sledgehammer. Dave cut her off. There was no fighting, no excuses. He just dropped out.

No amount of badgering, begging, or threats would get him to level with her. He was finished with her. Probably within that first week, she was sure he was seeing someone else, but she never discovered who it was. There was a new dispatcher at headquarters, but asking around yielded nothing. She spied on him and looked at his phone when she could. She didn’t realize that he was fantasizing about someone, that nothing would happen for another month.

Tuesday night, she called him three times, but his phone when to voicemail. She even called the station, but he was out. Then Wednesday morning, she was going to confront him once and for all when he got home, but he’d beat her to the punch. She got a text from him about the time she figured he’d be coming off his shift.I have something to say if you’re up. Please call me.

“What do you want? I’m sure you’re not coming back, so save your breath. I see that you’ve moved all your clothes out.”
