“Mind your business. That’s personal,” she said, giggling, trying to make light of it.

They hauled everything inside and began putting it away.

“What can I have for lunch? Then I’ll get out of your hair.”

“It’s kind of early for lunch,” she said, looking at her phone. She hadn’t even started working yet.

“Brunch then,” he said, opening a half gallon of butter pecan ice cream and eating it with a spoon.

“Anything your heart desires,” she said, moving items around in the fridge.

“How about you?”

“Right.”

“Afternoon delight, baby. I mean morning delight. We’ve never done that.”

“Seriously?” she asked, turning to him.

“Dead serious.”

She closed the refrigerator door and hooked her arm in his. “Lead the way.”

By focusing on Dave and work, Katrina made it through the rest of the week without falling apart. Not that she didn’t want to be pregnant. Every time the image of cells multiplying within her body crossed her mind, she wanted to shout with joy. Thankfully, she’d given up alcohol for Lent so that wasn’t a worry for her. The concept of being pregnant thrilled her.

It was the worry that Dave felt trapped. She’d overheard Amber telling someone at Maggie’s cottage during a barn building party that Dave wasn’t ready to have children. Sometime she’d have to ask him about it.

Finally, the weekend arrived. On Friday, he had a death investigation to deal with so that was out. Then on Saturday, there was a wildfire north of town and Dave had to assist with that mess.

Sunday morning, she woke up first. He’d come home after midnight, smelling of smoke and emotionally exhausted. Turning to him, she saw the dark smudges under his eyes. It had been a hellish week for the sheriff. She tiptoed into the bathroom to shower and dress, and when she came out, his eyes were open.

“You’re ready to go,” he murmured, rubbing his eyes.

“You need to sleep.”

“I want to go to church.”

“Aren’t you exhausted?”

“It’ll energize me,” he said, getting up.

He disappeared into the bathroom, and she made coffee. At the beginning of their relationship, it didn’t occur to Katrina that Dave would go to mass. But from the first Sunday, Dave was there at church with Katrina.

“I’m ready.”

She looked up as he came into the kitchen. Dave, right out of the shower, dressed in a white shirt, blue jeans, and polished cowboy boots was a spectacle, and she gasped. “Wow, you knock me off my feet.”

He slipped his arms around her, loving her. As close to perfect as a woman could be in his eyes, Katrina came into his life at the right moment, and he shuddered at how lucky he was.

“Look at you in your pearls and sweater set. It’s like I’m taking a college girl to church.”

“Ha! That’s not my intention, but I’ll take it.”

“I’m taking you out for breakfast after church. If you don’t mind the ride, we’ll go to New Orleans this morning. There’s a bakery that serves bananas Foster French toast I want to try after seeing a picture of it online.”

Happy, Katrina wondered if she’d ever told him that her most favorite thing to do all her life was to go to breakfast. “I will definitely go. I’ll have French toast, too.”
