“Oh! I forgot to tell you, Dave. I told Maggie. She was so wonderful. So, we’re off the hook; no need to worry about telling them.”

“Okay, that’s a relief. Do you still want to go out there?”

“I do. We’re going to Bonnet Island for a picnic.”

“Sounds like fun,” he said, pulling her up. “Let’s get you in bed. I want to watch a little TV if you don’t mind.”

“As long as I don’t have to; enjoy yourself.”

They kissed goodnight at the bedroom door, Dave going to his man cave across the hall and Katrina to bed.

Sunday morning mass took on special meaning for Katrina and Dave. This time, they lit a candle for baby David. “David Blanchard Chastain,” Dave whispered.

“What happened to David Justin Vincent?” Katrina asked, giggling.

“I want him all for us,” he said, a little choked up. “It sounds weird but I figure Justin is going to have his own baby and my dad paid his dues already.”

“Aw, you’re so sweet. I’ve heard people say your kid can never have too many people love him. “

They slid into the pew just as the lay reader came out and the liturgy of the word began.

“Lord have mercy upon us.”

They stood and sat and sang and kneeled. The beauty of mass affected the couple more now than it did when they were single because they truly believed the safety of their baby rested in the hands of God. Next was communion and they couldn’t get up to the front fast enough.

At the end, leaving together, they looked at each other and laughed, squeezing hands.

“Church is so emotional.”

“Let’s try forboringfor the rest of the day, if you don’t mind,” Dave said, holding the door open for Katrina.

“Yeah, that was intense. But I’m good now. How about you?”

“Once my heart rate goes down, I’ll be better.”

Katrina didn’t tell him she was pissed off at God. And herein lay the dilemma; she was going to love her little baby no matter what shape he was in. But really? Why? The still small voice said,Stop it, Katrina. Shit happens.Plus, the good news, to date he was healthy. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

“What’s wrong, baby?” Dave asked, pulling the car into their driveway.

“I want to be grateful, Dave. I don’t want to ask why? It’s not for me, mind you. It’s for him. My heart breaks worrying about the struggles he might have.”

They arrived at Creole Cottage in the nick of time. “Come on,” he said, tugging on her arm. “We need to have some fun today. Honest to God, I’m ready for a bender.”

“Oh, don’t do that without me,” she wailed. “Wait till I have the kid.”

As always, the moment they crossed the threshold, they were better. The cottage doled out comfort when she needed it most.

They raced each other into the house, Dave teasing her about the size of her belly, warning her not to overdo it. They undressed, swatting at each other.

“I’d be inside you right now if I didn’t tell Justin we’d be there at eleven.”

“Ha! You can get in tonight if you’re still in the mood. We need to take food, too.”

“Okay, we’ll stop at the pizza place and get a couple of pies and cheesesteaks. I’m not eating fried chicken from Spencer’s again for a month.”

“Do you want me to call in an order?” she asked
