“Yeah, well, I’d better record you the next time we have a conversation,” Maggie said, laughing.

“Maggie?”

They had just entered the restaurant when she heard her name. They stopped and looked around.

“Dave!”

Justin’s younger brother, six-foot-five-inch Sheriff Dave Chastain, had just paid for his meal. He came over to Maggie and they hugged, Dave having to stoop to reach her, so they both laughed.

“Dave, you know Katrina, don’t you? She’s been in town awhile.”

Aware that her jaw had dropped, Katrina attempted to pull herself together, staring at Dave Chastain.

He reached out a hand to shake, laughing. “Jeez, how corny. I’m sorry.”

But Katrina didn’t think it was corny at all and grabbed his hand, wanting to feel his skin, and holding on to it while he apologized. His hand was huge, the skin on it a little rough, but warm and dry. She imagined that palm on her flesh, the strong fingers exploring her body and she got the shivers which transferred to Dave, who had trouble taking his eyes off hers.

“Why do people shake hands, anyway?” Maggie said, staring at their joined hands, amused.

“It’s proof that I came in peace and that I’m not holding a weapon,” Dave said, still staring at Katrina. “Old Indian courtesy.”

They let go of each other, but reluctantly, at least for Katrina.

“Stay and have coffee with us,” Maggie said.

“I would love to, honestly,” he replied, still watching Katrina. “I just got a call I need to go to. But I’ll see you this weekend, won’t I?”

“You’re helping with barn construction stuff, right?” Maggie asked.

“Right.”

He leaned in and hugged her again.

“Well, I guess we’ll see you then. I just invited Katrina out for the day.”

Watching Katrina again, Dave had to force himself to get to work.

“You’ll be there?” he asked, grinning at her.

“Maybe,” Katrina answered, grinning at Dave.

“You just said you were coming,” Maggie said, shoving her a little.

“Right, I’ll be there,” Katrina replied, laughing, giving him a sidelong glance.

“Okay, it will be nice seeing you again,” Dave said, trying not to look her up and down and failing.

“See you later,” Maggie said, pushing Katrina to move. “Let’s go. I’m starving.”

“Wow,” Katrina mumbled, watching Dave leave. He looked over his shoulder before getting into his car, pausing when he saw her stare and they made eye contact again.

“He’s got a maniac girlfriend, Kat. You don’t want to mess with Amber,” Maggie said, pointing to the booth and sliding in across from her. “She’s creepy.”

“Why does someone like that have a creepy girlfriend?”

“Fate.”

“Tell me about Luke Esprit then. But the sheriff… well, wow.”
