“No. She even got me a breast pump. It was so sweet of her, but I’m a little weirded out.”

“Yeah, I get it. Thanks for the heads-up. I just came in from a trail ride so I’d better get cleaned up. I’ll call you later.”

They said goodbye and ended the call.

She debated putting everything away or leaving it out for Dave to see.

Her phone beeped. Is that an olive branch? It was a text from Dave.

She replied,Perhaps. It’s a nice one, whatever it is.

I’m headed home for lunch,he texted.

Checking the contents of the fridge, she’d make him an omelet and toast, something she’d mastered that he liked. She met him at the back door and when he saw the Po-Po shirt, he laughed out loud.

“Were you wearing that when she came over?” he asked, chuckling. “I didn’t notice this morning.”

“I was. She said she bought it for you and you never wore it.”

“It’s kind of insulting, but on you it’s hysterical if that’s okay to say.”

“I actually love it.”

He came inside and she kissed him.

“I’m starving,” he said, his usual statement when walking into the house.

“Your lunch is ready,” she said, showing him the plate. “You can eat in the dining room while I show you the loot.”

He washed up at the sink. “Do you have coffee?”

“I’ll make you a cup.”

He took his plate into the dining room.

“Yikes, look at all this stuff. Why does a baby need so many clothes?”

“She bought Maggie all the same gifts. Only in pink.”

Once he was situated at the table, she showed him the gifts, tens of tiny outfits, little loafers and saddle shoes, and all the fancy gadgets they’d ever need. The breast pump intrigued and amused Dave, who held the breast cup up to his nose.

“Dork, stop it,” she cried, laughing at him. “Milk to feed your kid will run through that thing.”

“You’ll have to wash it now.”

“I would anyway,” she said, grabbing it away from him.

He began to eat. “This is exactly what I was in the mood for. What time did she get here? Were you trying to work?”

“I worked earlier. It was fine, just odd. She was pleasant and it felt sincere. I’m not sure what precipitated it.”

“I have an idea what might have led to it.”

“What?” she asked.

“I told my dad about the baby’s diagnosis last night. I called him when you were in the shower.”

She sat back, staring out the front window. “Ugh. So, this might all be pity gifts.”
