“I’m not sure. She headed to her mother’s house the last I knew. Why do you ask?”

“Um, I’ve heard she’s jealous,” Katrina answered, looking into his eyes. “I don’t want to make trouble for a friend of Maggie’s.”

“She won’t know. And this is innocent.” He looked over at her, staring at her face, how pretty she was, and longing filled him until he was on the verge of grabbing her. “Oh, boy. It’s innocent right now, I mean.”

“Yes. I’m worried.”

“No worries, I promise,” he said, leaning in.

He sniffed her and she didn’t care, happy that her hair was clean. Katrina felt the same longing, but it was hopeless as long as Dave and Amber were involved. He seemed like a loyal guy who would never betray his woman, and she told him as much.

“You seem trustworthy,” Katrina said. “I admire that. And I’m sure Amber does, too.”

“Yeah, well…” He barked out a laugh, and Katrina grinned at him.

The sound of an outboard motor getting closer got their attention. “Who is that?” Maggie asked, sitting up.

“It looks like your aunt’s husband,” Justin said.

It was Val Amotte, Maggie’s aunt Elizabeth’s husband. But there was a young woman wearing a bikini, standing up at the bow of the boat like a figurehead, and about as imposing.

“Who’s the blond?” Maggie asked, shielding her eyes with her hand.

“Thenakedblond, you mean,” Katrina said. “She’s wearing a thong.”

“Justin, pull your tongue back in your mouth,” Maggie said, shaking her head in disgust.

“Yeah, it’s time to get back to work,” Dave said, swiftly standing up. “I’ll see you later, Katrina.”

He held out his hand for Justin, who kissed Maggie just before Dave pulled him to his feet, and they escaped.

They made it off the dock just as Val pulled alongside it, waving to the women.

“Ahoy there! I thought I’d come by and see if Justin could use my help.” Val had single-handedly restored a historic mansion in the village and was eager to help Justin with his expertise. “This is my niece, Bridget Benoit.”

They chorused, “Hello, Bridget.”

She jumped off the bow onto the dock, not an inch of flesh jiggling. Katrina and Maggie looked at each other out of the corners of their eyes, envy growing exponentially. Maggie felt unreasonable anger growing, too, thinking of this woman, a girl really, shaking her bare ass in front of Justin. When you go to visit people, shouldn’t you at least try to dress somewhat appropriately?

Before she made an ass out of herself and forbid the girl to go any farther, she bit her tongue just to see how it would play out.

“Here you go, Bridg,” Val said, handing her a bag and a folding beach chair.

It appeared she was staying on the dock when Val left with his tool belt and a big canvas bag of tools and headed to the construction site.

“I hope you don’t mind the intrusion,” she said after they introduced themselves. “I’m home on leave for a few weeks and my Uncle Val said I could visit just to get out of the city and the heat.”

“Are you on leave from the military?” Maggie asked, suddenly interested, the girl’s beautiful body no longer her focus.

Bridget took a beach towel out of her bag and wrapped it around her hips, to Maggie’s relief.

“Yep.”

“Where do you live?” Katrina asked.

“I’m stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, but my folks are in New Orleans. It’s been miserable this past week, wet and hot and a million tourists pissing on the sidewalks and throwing their trash around. I couldn’t take it any longer so I asked my uncle if I could stay with him until I leave.”

She opened her chair, facing the water, and sat down. “Oh, here, I almost forgot. Goodies from Aunt Elizabeth.”
