“We do. Oops, here’s Justin. Talk later.”

In a trance, Katrina placed glasses of iced tea and plates of ham sandwiches Dave had bought from Spencer’s on a tray to take to the terrace. It was hot out, but the sun was beginning its descent and the overhead fan whirled above. Dave had installed mist evaporator coolers and she flicked a switch to activate them. After she called for Dave to join her, she placed the tray on a table and returned to get the baby in his little chair.

She placed the baby chair on a lounge chair next to the couch and sat down, watching Dave wash up in the spigot in back of the house.

“Our neighbor is probably getting hot watching you.”

“A sweaty guy washing up outside is like a hobo stealing water.”

She threw him a towel and waited while he dried off. His shirt was draped over the back of the chair. Watching him stretch the shirt over his head, threading his arms through the holes, amused her.

“It’s like you’re doing an exotic dance, just for me.”

He added a little bump and grind, and she laughed at his antics. “I’m glad you like it,” he said, nodding toward the baby. “The little chair works for him.”

“It’s perfect. Annie bought that for him. She said her baby loves theirs.”

“Thank her for me.”

He sat down and lifted the frosty glass of iced tea, tipping it to his mouth and taking a long drink. “Oh, that’s good.”

“You made it,” she said, laughing. “You make the best iced tea.”

They ate the sandwiches. “This is so good. Southern ham. How about chips?”

“Nah,” he said. “It’s good by itself.”

She watched him carefully, and the time was right to ask.

“Did you want to tell me about Amber?”

He stopped chewing, staring at her. “Did Justin call?”

“Maggie,” she answered. “It’s fine. I should be aware so Amber can’t come around here again, all innocent and gaslight me.”

“If she comes near this house, I’ll call the cops. Wait. Iamthe cops. I’ll file a restraining order against her.”

He put the sandwich down and bent over to pick up the baby, unbuckling him out of the chair. Watching, Katrina could see the encounter with Amber had hurt him deeply.

“Why would she resort to name-calling? I don’t get it. An innocent baby.”

“She’s taking out her anger for what I did on my son. It was clear that’s what was happening. Jealousy because of what I did to her.” He held the baby up to his chest. “My behavior had something to do with this.”

He nodded toward baby David.

Katrina wasn’t going to tolerate self-pity for long. “Your behavior did have everything to do with it. We had the most amazing, passionate sex that is possible and didn’t use birth control. And our reward is this amazing baby. I wish you would have told Amber that.

“Please don’t let the cruel words of that reprobate change our blessings. Remember, she trashed Maggie’s house because she spied on Justin, with whom she’d had a one-night stand, while he was having sex with Maggie in her own yard. So, yeah. She’s nuts.”

Chuckling, Dave nodded, cuddling the baby. “That first night with youwasthe most amazing sex I’d ever had. Ever.”

Gazing at each other, it was only nine months ago but it was like they’d been together a lifetime.

“Me, too. I cried while we were doing it. That had never happened before.”

“I can’t remember anything before I met you. It’s like we have always been together.”

“I wish we had. I wish I’d met you when Maggie met Justin back when she was seven.”
