First, Grace Breaux confessed to Gus that she’d stirred the pot to Amber.

“Oh, Grace, why’d you do that? She’s cray cray. And that young couple just had a baby; do they need her grief?”

“I decided she needed to hear about it sooner than later, before the talk started up at the lodge.”

“Katrina and Dave don’t go to the wild horse meetings though, do they?”

“They don’t, but Justin and Maggie do, and sure enough there would be talk on their behalf. I felt justified.”

Gus shook his head while she described what the conversation had been. “I enlightened her about Down syndrome, but it helped little. She has an ax to grind and I might have given her a reason.”

“I’m not sure what you can do about it now,” Gus said, slightly annoyed. It would be a first in their marriage.

In a stone mansion on the bay, Amber Greely sat on the corner of a long couch in the den, watching reality television; a group of middle-aged women who had competing facelifts, talking about their latest male conquests. The phone rang, and she aimed the remote at the giant TV to shut the noise off before answering.

“What’s my girl doing?” It was Phil.

“I am missing you terribly and feeling sorry for myself. Not in that order.”

He chuckled, used to her misery when left alone. “I’m coming home early. This was a bust. But watch for a delivery tomorrow. I managed to make it worthwhile for your sake.”

“Oh!” she said, sitting up, her mood brightening. “I can’t wait. But I’m not doing this again. Next time, if it’s inconvenient for me to tag along, I’ll go stay at my mother’s house.”

“Don’t be hasty, now. There won’t be another time you can’t travel with me. I should have known it would be a waste of time. The good news is I didn’t lose any money.”

“That’s good.”

“Tell me why you’re unhappy.”

“Besides missing you? I made a terrible faux pas today. It was worse than that. I acted like a terrible bitch and hurt someone.”

“Ugh. Tell me everything.”

So, she told him about following Dave behind the post office, even about the slap and the hurtful pronouncement about the baby.

“Amber, I agree, that was awful. Make amends immediately or you’ll never be able to do so.”

“And how do I do that, Phil? Tell me! It was beyond anything I thought I was capable of.” She burst into tears, shocking him.

“Do you trust me?” he asked, wishing he could get on a plane and be with her that evening.

“With my life.”

“I’m going to call him.”

“No, don’t do that. What can you say that will make a difference?”

“You just have to trust me.”

After a moment’s consideration, she relented. “Okay. Do what you have to do. It can’t make it worse.”

“I love you, babe. I’ll try to get home tonight.”

“You will? How’s that possible?”

“When you have money, anything is possible.”

They said goodbye after he promised to get in touch as soon as he had his itinerary.
