“Thank you, Kat. And I admire you. You’re an executive!”

“Yeah, we’ll see how that goes.”

Emily, the server, came to get their order.

“I’m going to be bad and get cream pie,” Annie said. “And coffee, cream and sugar, please.”

“I’ll have tomato juice and wheat toast,” Katrina said while Annie looked on, flaring her nostrils.

“WTF, are you gearing up for prison time or something?” she asked while Katrina roared with laughter. “Why the hell did you order that?”

“I don’t know. It just sounds good.”

“The only thing missing is Maggie,” Annie said. “As soon as she can figure out a floatation device for her kid so they can boat in, she said she’d meet us in town. We should do this every Saturday morning.”

“I’ll tell her to come in with Justin. He works a lot of Saturdays.”

“Yeah, but he works at the clinic at Bayou Cottage now. Maggie said he does small animal visits with Tina in a Baby Bjorn.”

“How cute! I bet the clients love it.”

“I’m sure the female clients do,” Annie replied.

Emily brought their order over and they laughed at the contrast between Annie’s cream pie piled high with whipped cream, and Katrina’s wizened wheat toast.

Enjoying each other’s company, the babies napped soundly on the seats next to them when Annie looked up over Katrina’s shoulder, dropped her spoon, and sputtered.

“Oh, fuck.”

“What?” Katrina asked, frightened.

“Don’tturn around. It’s Amber and she’s headed our way.”

Flushing, Katrina turned to fuss with the baby.

“I’m probably the last person you want to see,” Amber said, towering over the table.

“Why do you say that?” Annie asked. “Do you want to join us?”

Amber frowned, looking from Annie to Katrina. “I guess you didn’t tell her. Phil said he spoke with you so you must know what happened.”

“Amber, it’s not important,” Katrina said, trying not to beg. “Please, just drop it.”

“What happened?” Annie asked, her voice an octave higher.

“Nothing. At least nothing I want to discuss in front of my baby.”

Annie leaned against the back of the booth. “Let me guess. Amber put her foot in her mouth. I figured something like that would happen.”

“Why, Annie? I’ve never been anything but cordial to you.”

“But you screwed over my friends, didn’t you?”

“It’s okay, Annie,” Katrina pleaded. “Please, just let it go.”

“You look amazing, Katrina,” Amber said, on the verge of being shrill. “I bet Dave is all over you. You don’t look like you just had a baby.”

“Yeah, well…” Katrina mumbled, sinking lower in her seat, the downside to it that baby David was in full view.
