“I think it’s because they could be brother and sister,” Maggie said. “I just realized it. Look at them!”

“Barbie and Ken,” Katrina whispered.

“My work here is done,” Maggie said, laughing.

Bridget introduced herself to Dave and Justin as their cousin, to their surprise. Maggie noticed Val didn’t seem too pleased that she’d exposed the cousins’ relationship.

“She said the family was estranged,” Maggie explained to Justin. “There’s probably more here under the surface.”

The day wound down and when it was time for everyone to leave, Katrina saw Dave get in his truck, watching her with a smile.

“I wish I could go with him,” Katrina said out loud.

“Does my brother know this?” Justin asked, surprised.

“No. Don’t forgetAmber,” Maggie said.

“Oh, ugh.Amber,” Justin said, grimacing. “What about Alphé?”

“Alphé is lovely, but he’s not a long-term kinda guy. I hate to say it.”

“Let’s get on the porch,” Maggie said, waving them along.

After climbing the steps, Maggie’s dog, Brulee, immediately lay on her side and fell asleep.

“Maggie will agree with me; my brother will be at your service if he finds out you’re interested.”

Sighing, Katrina leaned back in the chair. “I’m going to let nature take its course. From what I can see, Amber isn’t letting Dave go.”

“You got that right,” Maggie said. “It’s almost obscene.”

“In what way?” Justin asked.

“In how she doesn’t even seem to like him, but wants to be part of this family,” Maggie answered. “And I have to put up with it for the same reason. I wouldn’t give her the time of day if it weren’t for Dave.”

“In the meantime, does this mean you’ll spend your life with a guy you don’t really love?” Justin asked Katrina.

“No, not spend my life. I’m making my own life and it might not need to include a guy. I’ve got Luke coming tomorrow to look at the cottage renovations and with my job, I’ll be busy for a while.”

“Well, if I hear that anything is up with Dave and Amber, I’ll let you know so you can put Plan B into motion.”

“And what’s Plan B?” Maggie asked, laughing.

“Plan B is Katrina making the move on my brother.”

Sunday morning after church, Luke Esprit stopped by Katrina’s Creole Cottage to look at what she wanted done.

Standing aside to hold the door, she watched the expression on his face change the minute he stepped over the threshold.

“Wow.”

“You feel it?”

“Yes, ma’am. I have always loved this old place,” he said, looking around.

“It’s a gut job. The kitchen and bathrooms are disgusting.”

“Yes, I figured.”
