“After compatibility in bed? I guess that you can make me laugh. And you make me laugh. You’re so dry that it took me a while to appreciate your sense of humor.”

“I have to watch it because I can be sarcastic and that’s never good,” he explained. “It can be cruel. What else do you need?”

“Loyalty because I’m loyal. I’ll never betray you, even though you’ve said I might end up with someone else, I would never do that if we’re together like this.”

“I thought we were going to just be friends. I even restocked your bedroom with more mini pads.”

She laughed, playfully slapping him. “No, I might have suggested we stay platonic when I was having a brain fart. I’m new to all this, too. I’m scared that when I leave it will be too painful for us if we’re seriously involved.”

“It’s going to be painful,” he said, wondering if she was preparing to pull back again. The yoyo was exhausting. “I’m not sure we’re going to avoid the pain, Bridget.”

“That’s so depressing,” she replied.

But he was ready to move on to the next topic. They’d figure out where they were on the day she left to return to San Diego. For now, it was better to be all in. Just enjoy what they had and go with the flow.

“Are you hungry?” he asked. “Because I’ve worked up an appetite.”

“I could eat for sure.”

“Come on,” he said, sliding out of bed. “I’ll fix something. Then I’ll give your cousins a call and let them know you’re home.”

She lay back and watched him walk around the room, gathering his clothes. His body amazed her.

“You’re really something, you know that?”

“I’m glad you think so. I’m headed to the shower. Do you want to join me?”

“Only if you want to spend more time in bed,” she replied, grinning.

He looked down, the evidence blatantly obvious that he was ready for more.

“I’m ready.”

Driving to Bayou Cottage together was an unfamiliar experience. They met there when Luke was working on Maggie and Justin’s barn, but visiting as a couple, anexpectantcouple, was new.

“I’m a little nervous about this,” Bridget said.

“Why? Justin is your cousin.”

“Yeah, but his wife is weird around me,” she replied. “Are Dave and Katrina going to be there by any chance?”

“I’m pretty sure they are. I let them know we were going today.”

“If Katrina is there, it will take some of the heat off me.”

“What do you think is going on?” Luke asked, concerned.

“Frankly, I think Maggie is jealous. I think she’s afraid I’m going to snatch her boyfriend, even though he’s my cousin. Did you notice I’m dressed like a nun? If I had any more coverage, I wouldn’t be able to breathe in this heat.”

Luke looked over at her to see what she was wearing. He hadn’t really noticed until right then that she wore a loose-fitting sundress that had a high neck and went to her knees, not something she’d worn around him in the past.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Luke said, his face set. “I wish there was a way I could clear it up for you but there really isn’t.”

“No, you’re right. Just watch how she interacts with me today.”

“Where did that dress come from, anyway?”

“It’s a bathing suit cover-up,” she said. “Normally, I’d wear a string-thong-bikini under it. But today I have on full-coverage underpants and a bra.”
