“I’d love one,” she said. “Do you want me to take her?”

“Sure, here you go. The warmer takes a minute.”

The conversation about single parenting had made both of them uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry if I sounded like I was feeling sorry for myself,” Adam said.

“I didn’t take it that way at all. I just wanted to convey that I’m sure many women will be eager to take on your situation. I was trying not to sound too aggressive.”

“You’re fine. You didn’t sound aggressive. Anyway, it started because of the nursery. I’d have to add on another room if I had any more kids.”

“Doesn’t this place have an attic?”

“It does.”

“Problem solved. Just do a bunk room up there. It’s the latest trend in Cypress Cove.”

“Is that right? I need to get up to speed with what’s going on in the cove.”

“All those ancient places in town are being snapped up by out-of-towners. They’ve got the money to spend to fix up the old rotting places.”

“It’s a labor of love,” Adam said.

The timer for the baby bottle warmer beeped and he got it out, wiped it off, and handed it to Katy. “Have a seat and I’ll bring the wine over.”

They sat on opposite ends of the couch in the cozy living room.

“We should probably have a fire.” He crouched down by the fireplace, stacking kindling under logs that were already there. “January weather out here is nuts; hot in the daytime and cold at night.”

“That’s the bayou.”

He struck a match and put it to the kindling that ignited right away.

“This little room will warm up fast,” he said, stretching over to look at the baby. “How’s she doing?”

“Still drinking,” Katy said. The little baby was so sweet with her little round head and long lashes on her cheeks. “I’ll miss her when I go back to school.”

“Will you?”

“I think so.”

She didn’t say she’d miss the baby’s father, too. It was too soon for that kind of talk; he hadn’t even kissed her yet, although after the long summer of seeing each other daily, and often having lunch together, she felt like it would be more than okay to kiss him.

“If you want to kiss me, you can.”

Grinning, Adam was speechless for a second. So instead of saying something probably inane, he moved a little closer and kissed her. Her breath was sweet, like the wine, and her lips were so soft. She stuck her little pointed tongue between his lips and blood surged to his groin. For the second time that night, he experienced the dichotomy of baby and arousal.

When they parted, he pointed at the baby. “When you arrived tonight, you instantly attracted me and it felt strange, holding a baby and, well, you know. But come to think of it, at the day care today the same thing happened.”

“It’s like a babysitter inviting her boyfriend of the hour to the house where she’s sitting and having a make-out session while she’s holding the baby. It can’t be healthy in the spiritual realm.”

Laughing together, the moment brought them to a new place quickly. They had kissed, and teasingly acknowledged that there was sex in the air that might impact his baby.

“Move over there until she’s done eating,” Katy said, nodding to the end of the couch.

“Aw, she’ll be okay. If anything is going to happen between us, it’s going to be with her in the middle.”

“And I’m your babysitter,” Katy said, laughing. “See? I told you there would be someone who would take this on.”
