“So, you meant yourself?”

“Well, can we not go there right now?” Katy asked. “This is our first date.”

“Oh, okay,” he replied, laughing. “I’m glad you’re making some moves, Katy, because I’m kind of a dud right now after all this.” He pointed to the baby. “Who wants to date someone with a baby tagging along all the time?”

“You’re not a dud.”

“Then will you see me again? I mean, me and Adelaide.”

“Of course. According to my sister, you’re going to be around for a while and I don’t go back to school for another week.”

“Is that all you get? I thought winter break lasted till February.”

“Yeah, not since I’ve been in school.” The baby pushed the bottle nipple out of her mouth. “I guess she’s finished.”

Katy placed baby Adelaide over her shoulder and she burped out a loud noise.

“I’ll take her,” Adam said, laughing. “You must have the magic touch.”

Picking up her almost finished glass of wine, Katy lifted it to him, making him laugh, and he left the room.

Five minutes later, he returned. “She’s out for the next couple of hours.”

“You can get some rest. I’m exhausted and anyway, I don’t want to drink more wine because I’m driving.”

She got up to take the glass into the kitchen.

“I’m sorry you have to go but I get it. Can we do it again tomorrow night?”

“I’m actually off tomorrow if you want to get together earlier. I’m perfectly happy doing the same thing we did today—care for the new baby and sit on your porch.”

He followed her as she stopped to pull on her sweater and then to the front door. “I’ll walk you out. What’s your usual routine on Saturday?”

“I putter around, nothing earth-shattering. How about yours?”

“I don’t know yet,” Adam said. “In the past, it was single behavior, mostly selfish. I usually found something to do around here. Tomorrow, I’ll probably try out her stroller. I got one of those jogging strollers.”

“I’ll run with you! Where will you go?”

“Some place paved, so maybe the park off Marina Street. We can eat at the burger joint afterward. We don’t need to burn too many calories.”

“Perfect,” she exclaimed, excited. “Do you want to pick me up since you’ll be in town? I’m not sure I can score my mother’s rusted out Kia again.”

“We don’t want to leave her without a car on a Saturday. I’ll text you when we get started. Keep your fingers crossed she sleeps tonight. Regardless, it’ll be by ten so you don’t think you have to be ready to go by six.”

“Ten it is,” she said.

She unlocked the car door and threw her bag into the passenger seat before turning around to embrace Adam. It seemed ridiculous to wait for him to make a move since they’d already kissed and he made it clear he was interested. She vowed to herself right then that there would be no game playing. There wasn’t the time.

The ride home from Adam’s place helped her solidify some things that had troubled her recently, the main one being what she’d do after graduation. And she was through with school, so that took medical school off the table. She was sorry she hadn’t listened to her high school advisor and gone into a nursing program because she’d at least have that to fall back on. What would she do with a major in premed?

The next thing that solidified, gelled, came into fruition, was herfeelingsfor Adam. Each time she saw him, the same thing happened to her; her body temperature rose until she had the chills.

“I’ve got a fever!” she told Calista after that first meeting at the pool. “I’m shivering.”

“Come here,” she said, pulling her sister behind the counter. She placed her hand on Katy’s forehead. “You feel warm.”

“Oh, that’s real scientific,” Katy said, shaking her off. “Don’t you have a thermometer in this place?”
