“For heaven’s sake,” Calista said, rummaging through the cupboard in the bathroom. “This is a day care. Of course, there’s a thermometer.”

She took her temperature and it was normal. The same thing happened when she saw Adam again the next day, and the next and the next. That and damp panties, which she decided was disgusting.

“What?” Calista asked, laughing out loud when Katy told her during girl talk. “A guy never turned you on before?”

“Not like that,” she said. “I mean yes when we are together, aiming for that to happen, but just in conversation? No. I might need antianxiety drugs.”

“You don’t need drugs. Unplanned pregnancy is rampant in Cypress Cove. Hopefully, since he’s already had one baby, he’ll be careful, but don’t leave it up to him.”

It had started out as a schoolgirl crush six months ago, but it was real now, and if she had to run all over Cypress Cove to grow that relationship, that was just what she would do. And running would keep them out of bed for a while. If she hung around Adam’s shack all day, well, that couldn’t lead to anything good.

By ten Saturday morning, she was ready to run. At ten ten, she got a text.

Just motivating here. Baby girl was up every hour last night. She might have gas. I’ll be there with running shoes on at eleven.

At eleven, she heard a car pull up to a gravel driveway that led to her parents’ shack. She ran out to greet him just as he was dragging a fancy jogging stroller out of the back of the SUV.

“Good morning,” she said, the urge to kiss him powerful, but she fought it; they weren’t at the kiss hello stage yet. “Aren’t we going to the park?”

He stopped for a moment, looked at the stroller, and scratched his head. “We are. I thought we’d leave from here.”

“It’s two miles away,” she said, looking down at her legs. “I hope I can go that far.”

“How about if we walk and not run until we get there,” he said, grinning.

“She’d probably appreciate it,” Katy said, watching as he unbuckled the baby out of her car seat. “This is a treacherous path.”

He placed a special insert for a newborn into the stroller so she could lay flat. “The doc said it was okay to take her out as long as it didn’t get too hot. This weather is about as perfect as we get in the bayou.”

Buckling her in the seat next took a few minutes. “It’s not like she’ll jump out, but God forbid I tip this thing over, she won’t fall out on her face.”

“Good Lord, man, what have you been thinking about?”

“It’s awful, you stay awake worrying about the what-ifs.”

He glanced over at Katy’s shoes and she saw his eyes slowly make their way up her body to her face, when he grinned.

“You look nice,” he said with a smirk, and she got it right away.

“So do you. I’m glad we’re doing something physical instead of lazing around your place,” she replied.

“I’m not,” he answered.

“You bring a bottle?”

“Of wine? Damn! I didn’t even think of it.”

“Adam, not wine! Formula,” she said, amused.

“Yes, formula! I’ve got three on ice in this thing,” he said, lifting a pink insulated bag out of the back of his car and stuffing it in the stroller. “We can stay out all day.”

“Watch, we’ll give up in half an hour.”

“Ha! I have longer staying power than that,” he said, winking at her.

“Oh, jeez, are you going to sexualize everything we say to each other?”

“Probably,” he said. “You’re adorable and I like you. If you like me, I think we’re good to go.”
