“No, her husband would never lower himself to go to a lowly country diner. I don’t even know how he ended up in Louisiana. I think he’s originally from Chicago.”

“Oh. Well, good, it’s his loss. I love that place and it’s even better if we don’t have to worry about her showing up there.”

“Should we go early like old people or do you want to wait until later?”

“I’m starved now,” she said. “It’s not that early.”

“It’s four,” he said, barking out a laugh. “But I’m hungry too. Let’s go.”

Katy opened the fridge and got two bottles just in case they were having fun out and didn’t want to rush home. They worked together getting the bag ready, making sure they’d remembered the pacifier, and extra everything in case of a blowout. For being so small, she’d had poop up to her hairline from time to time.

“You ready?” Adam asked.

“Ready.”

She wanted to learn how to buckle the baby into the car seat; every seat was different. Her goal was to do as much as she could to give him a break.

“I appreciate you helping,” he said.

“I would have thought your family would help a little more,” she commented.

“They’re busy at the store. They’d probably come over if I asked, but I don’t really need the help. I’ll be back to work soon. Evidently, the sub they got for physics sucks. As soon as Calista says I can bring Adelaide to the day care, I’ll go back. She wants me to take the full twelve weeks. But there’s only so much gardening a person can do. Honestly, it’s lonely being a single parent. Wah, wah, wah. Listen to me whine.”

“If I come back more often, will that help?”

“You’d do that?”

“Of course, Adam. I just gave my virginity to you. I think I can take a plane ride to see you,” she said, laughing.

“When can you come again?”

“Spring break is coming up pretty fast. It’s in March and I’ll have a week off.”

“That sounds great. I’ll survive a month.”

They arrived at the restaurant.

“Here we go,” Adam said. “Her first restaurant visit.”

“You ready?”

They turned around and looked at Adelaide who had found her fingers to suck on.

“She’s ready.”

Diners watched the beautiful couple with their tiny baby enter the diner and right away, like people do when an infant is in their midst, the questions started.

“Aw, how old?”among others.

Adam did all the talking and when they sat down, Katy giggled. “They probably wonder what’s wrong with the mother since I didn’t answer a single question.”

“It’s no one’s business,” he muttered. “I hate the idea that people are talking over her, spraying her with their germs.”

“If you’re concerned, we can rethink outings until she’s a little older,” Katy suggested, worried for Adam.

“That’s okay, I’m being a jerk,” he said, chuckling.

A voice got their attention.
