“Well, look who’s here!”

It was Calista and her husband, Austin Macon, out for dinner without their brood including year-and-a-half-old fraternal twins.

“Who’s got your kids?” Katy asked.

“Angela,” Calista said. “As long as the babies are sleeping, she’ll be okay. She’s got us on speed dial.”

“We’ll let you two have your dinner in peace. Come on, Calista,” Austin said. “Have a good trip back to school, Katy.”

Calista kissed her sister. “I’m glad I ran into you,” she said. “When will you be home again?”

“Spring break. I’ll have more time to visit then,” Katy said.

“You can come by the shack when she’s home,” Adam said. “I’d like that.”

“We’ll do that,” Calista said.

Chapter 4

Monday morning came too soon. Katy woke up with Adam’s back to her, covered in a t-shirt, and that meant he had been up in the night caring for Adelaide. The monitor was on but no sounds emanated from it, meaning she was sleeping. The rule was if the baby slept, the whole house slept.

A wave of depression washed over her because she didn’t want to leave. She was falling in love with Adam and she made sure he knew it. He turned over and reached for her.

“I’m dreading today,” he said, tightening his grip.

“I want to stay here with you. I hope that’s okay.”

“It’s okay,” he said. “I feel the same way.”

After what he had gone through with Ashlie, he’d intended to keep their relationship as neutral as possible, but that would not work. The heart would do what it wanted where Katy Theriot was concerned. He pulled her on top of him and with the countdown to her departure beginning, they didn’t waste any time.

They puttered around until the absolute last minute, and then she couldn’t help it, hiding in the bathroom to weep.

Adam insisted on taking Katy to the airport. “You about ready, sweetheart?”

“No. I don’t want to go.”

“I don’t want you to go either, but you can’t quit school four months before graduation. You’d end up hating me.”

She laughed, grabbing a tissue to blow her nose. “Ha ha ha, you’re so funny. I’m ready to quit.”

“I won’t let you. Angus is already pissed off at me for you not going to medical school. I know you tried to let that comment slip by, but I heard it loud and clear.”

“I told you last summer I had no intention of going on to medical school. I want to work in the day care. You don’t need a Bachelor of Science in Biology. But guess what? I’m hanging my certificate in the front office this summer.”

“Then if you change your mind…”

“I doubt if that will happen,” she said.

They got everything out in the car. “I hate that you’ll be in the car for two hours.”

“It’s fine. I’ll listen to music and the baby will be thrilled. I’ll feed her after we drop you off and she’ll have an hour to digest before we get home. I might even stop by my folks’ place.”

They buckled up and he pulled out of the driveway. Holding hands kept that connection between them for the last hour they’d have together for a month. He brought her hand to his lips and kissed the palm, then each of her fingers, the gesture so endearing, the tears came again.

“I will not survive this.”

“I’m not sure I will either,” Adam said. “We’ll just do FaceTime constantly like we did for the last four weeks.”
