“I’d rather be in your bed.”

“Baby, I want you in my bed, too. You’ll be back in a month for a whole week. And then you’ll graduate and we never have to be apart again. I just told you I love you. I want to get married, too.”

“Married? You’re kidding.”

“Ha! No, ma’am, I am not.”

“I guess we’ve known each other long enough, haven’t we?”

“All our lives. I’m almost eight years older than you. Is that a problem?”

“If it is, it’s too late,” she said, laughing out loud. “Why marriage though?”

“You’ll think I’m nuts,” Adam answered, glancing at her.

“Try me,” she said. “Now you’ve got my curiosity going.”

“It’s disrespectful to ask you to live with me and my kid, that’s all,” he said. “I’m serious about you, so I’ll make the commitment, till death do us part.”

“Wow, I really lucked out when I met you, didn’t I?” Katy asked.

“Ha! I was the one who was lucky when I met you.” Adelaide let out a screech. “The sprite’s awake. I’ll drop you off and go to the cell phone lot and feed her.”

“I’ve got plenty of time,” Katy said. “Let me go with you. It will be the last bottle I feed her for a month.”

“Are you sure?”

“Sure. I don’t want to hang around a gate for an hour.”

“What if you get hung up in security?”

“Oh well,” she said, grinning.

They hung out together in the cell phone lot until the last minute, talking about their future, passing baby Adelaide back and forth.

“I never thought I could love a baby that wasn’t my own as much as I love her,” Katy said, kissing the baby’s head for the tenth time.

“I guess I’d better buckle her up,” Adam said, watching Katy.

She reluctantly handed her over. “Wow, this is going to be so hard.”

He got back into his seat and reached for her, encircling her body with his brawny arms. She felt safe in his embrace and wanted to stay with him forever. Then her phone beeped.

“Fudge. San Diego is calling,” she said. “My flight is boarding in twenty minutes.”

“Okay, back to the airport with you, wench.”

“I hope I miss it,” she said, laughing.

“No, you don’t.”

He pulled up to the curb and hopped out to get her bags from the back. She joined him behind the car and gruffly, he pulled her over, grabbing her in a bear hug.

“I love you, Katy. Come back to me.”

Tipping her head up, she sought his lips and kissed him one more time.

“I’ll send you a text when I’m on board, but I don’t think you’ll be home yet so don’t look at your phone.”
