“I will, love you, Adam.” She puckered up for the phone screen and he laughed at her.

“Don’t do that,” he said, squirming a little. “You do not know how sexy that looks.”

“Ha! Goodbye!”

Because she had scored in the 99thpercentile on the MCAT test, and had already been accepted at UCSD which was one of the most prestigious medical schools in Southern California, Tulane would place Katy on their waitlist. Angus Theriot was over the moon.

“I might talk like a dumb hick, but my girls prove that me and Windy have some smart DNA. My girl gonna be a doctor!”

At the sound of footsteps followed by keys rattling, Ashlie Thebideux Marco jumped up from the cot and ran to the door, looking through the peephole.

“Step away from the door,” a phantom voice shouted. She did because what was the alternative? Make a run for it?

The door swung into the already tight room and Jack Armstrong stepped through.

“They make you come in? I thought I’d meet you in a room somewhere out of here.”

“They aren’t set up like that. This is a short stay facility.” He looked at her with something bordering on disgust. It reminded her of being admonished by Terry. “What in the hell were you thinking?”

“I obviously wasn’t thinking,” she cried, moving away from him. Only there wasn’t far to go.

There were only two places to sit, the toilet or the cot, a concrete outcropping from the wall that had a one-inch foam pad on it.

“I’m sitting on your bed, sorry,” he said. “I’m having trouble with my leg.”

“I don’t want to hear it. Why am I still here? Arrange for bail, Jack!”

“You think you’re gonna get bail after an attempted kidnapping?”

“Why not? She’s my baby!”

“This is Cypress Cove, Ashlie. In the state of Louisiana, you could get up to five years in jail for this stunt.”

“What’s the minimum?”

“Six months. But because you had been warned, the judge might do a harsher sentence.”

“Are you going to even try to get bail?”

“I am going to try. Terry is here. He’s not thrilled.”

“Yes, well, it is his fault, isn’t it?”

“Indirectly, but you should have never listened to him.” Jack got up to leave. “I’ll be in touch.”

“Are they going to let Terry in?”

“I hope so.” He knocked on the door and turned to look at her again. “Hang tight, Ashlie. I’m headed to court now to see about bail, so you’ll hear tonight.”

“Don’t I have to appear before the judge?”

“Not in a backwater like this. We’ll talk later, okay?”

The guard unlocked the door to let Jack out.

“Is my husband able to come in?” she asked.
