“So, we’re back there again.”

“Yes. If he wants an open marriage, I’ll provide one for him.”

“Does he know we’re going to get together?”

“No. It’s none of his business.”

“I’ve always been able to give you more than he can,” Paul said. “I’m not sure why you chose Terry.”

“It was a mistake. Will you give me another chance?”

“I will, but this time I want to make it permanent. It’s going to mean losing a lifelong friendship with Terry but it will be worth it if you’ll make the commitment.”

“I’ll tell him today.”

“Okay, let’s bypass the Marriot. Just move in with me.”

“Are you sure?” she asked, her heart racing.

“Yes. I’ll meet you at the house in an hour.”

They said goodbye. Ashlie gazed around the beautiful room she’d shared with Terry for less than a year. She didn’t love Paul, but she could, once she separated her life from Terry’s. Paul was gentle, understanding, and patient.

While she packed her bags, she thought of Adelaide. Once she was out of the marriage with Terry, her claim of giving up her parental rights because of duress would be more believable and hopefully, she’d get her baby back.

Epilogue

June in New Orleans is hotter than in Cypress Cove, and trying to stay out of the sun, Adam Spencer stood under a moss-covered cypress tree on the edge of the athletic field at Tulane University with four-and-a-half-year-old Adelaide, drinking iced tea thru a straw.

“When’s Mommy Katy coming?” she asked.

“Keep watching that gate.”

“Will she still have her cap and gown on?”

“I’m not sure. Why?”

He looked down at his daughter and grinned. She was so cute, but also smart.

“I want it,” she answered.

“It’ll be too big for you,” Adam said, chuckling.

“Not for long. I’ll wear it when I graduate from nursery school. Oh, look! There are the maw maws!”

She ran away from him, but Adam was on her heels.

“Ma, Betsy,” he said. “Did you ladies get to see it?”

“We got here just as she got on the stage. Your pa is talking to Angus Theriot somewhere in the crowd.”

She grabbed Adelaide’s hand. “Are you proud of your mommy?” Paulina asked.

“I’m so proud of her. She’s going to be a doctor. I think I’ll do that someday, too.”

“You can, once we get your mother’s student loans paid off,” Adam said, laughing.

“I need to go to the ladies’ room,” Betsy Theriot said. “What about you, Addy?”
