“I do, too,” she said, handing her ice tea cup to Adam.

“We’ll be right back,” Paulina said.

They left Adam to return under the tree, watching the throngs of people, proud families who were there for their loved ones’ medical school graduation.

“Adam!”

He turned around to see Ashlie and Paul Clark with their three children—three-and-a-half-year-old Jennifer and wild two-year-old twin boys, Danny and Eli. Paul’s hand was outstretched and after Adam shook it, Paul quickly grabbed the boys.

“These kids are nuts today,” he said. “What the hell?”

“It’s the heat,” Ashlie said, snickering. “And the beignets they had for breakfast.”

“Where’s Adelaide?” Jennifer asked, in love with her big sister.

“She just went to the ladies’ room with the maw maws. She’ll be right back.”

“Today’s the big day, huh?” Paul said.

“It is. Are you guys here for Katy? She’ll be so happy you came,” Adam said.

“Well, not exactly,” Paul replied. “We didn’t want to intrude. We’re coming to her party, though.”

“My cousin graduated,” Ashlie said. “Oh, look, Jen! Here they come!”

Adelaide was in between Katy and Paulina, holding their hands, swinging in the air.

“Jennifer!” Adelaide cried, letting go of their hands and running to her sister, who she embraced, and then to Ashlie, who bent down to hug her.

“Mommy Ashlie! Why are you guys here?” Adelaide asked, making them laugh.

“Your father just asked that,” Ashlie said. “Remember cousin Beatrice?”

“She graduated with me,” Katy said, hugging Ashlie. “Are you guys coming by the house for our little get-together?”

“We are, later, if that’s okay. We have to go to my aunt’s place for Bea’s party first, and then we’ll swing by the shack.”

“I hate to break that up,” Paul said, nodding toward Jennifer and Adelaide who were deep in a whispered conversation, drawing in the dirt with sticks.

“Jennifer can stay with us,” Katy said.

“Are you sure?” Ashlie asked. “You must be exhausted.”

“I’m fine. And Paulina and my mother will be there. I’m sitting with my feet up and going to let everyone serve me.”

“Okay, we’ll be by later. I’ll text you.”

Ashlie asked Jennifer if she wanted to stay with Adelaide and of course, the answer was yes, so they were free to leave.

“Okay, everyone ready to go home?” Adam asked.

“Yes. I need to get out of this gown and give it back to the rental company,” Katy said, trying to get the snaps of the robe unhooked.

Adam held it while she took it off. “Adelaide wants to wear it for nursery school graduation.”

“Is that right? I think I can do better than that thing. God, I’m hot.”

He looked at her belly. “Are you going to make it to your due date?”
