“I hope so,” she said, laughing. “I might be the only woman on earth who doesn’t care if her pregnancy lasts forever.”

“I can’t wait,” Adam said, patting her belly.

While they waited for paw paws Angus and Butch, the girls came over to Katy, and with her permission, smoothed their hands over her belly to feel the baby move. It was another little girl.

“This kid is going to have so many clothes,” Katy said. “Mommy Ashlie is giving all your little girl baby clothes to this baby.”

“Boys can’t wear my clothes,” Jennifer said.

“That’s right. Are you girls going to think of a name for this baby?” Katy asked.

“Wait, I thought I would get to do that,” Adam whined.

“Daddy, you can help,” Adelaide said. “But you told me and Jen that we could choose the first name.”

“When did I say that?” Adam asked, unlocking the car.

“She said it,” Katy answered, laughing. “So, it must be true.”

“We’ll follow you,” Butch called out.

Adam buckled little Jennifer in and then reached over to buckle Adelaide. “Daddy, I can do that now.”

“You can?” he asked. “Wow, when you were a brand-new baby and I buckled you in your infant seat, I thought to myself, I’ll be doing this until she can do it for herself. I guess this is the day.”

Adelaide threw her arms around his neck. “Daddy, I love you.”

“I love you, too, sweetheart.”

He closed her door and got into the driver’s seat, flicking an errant tear off his cheek.

Katy took his hand and squeezed it. “You’ll be buckling this little girl in soon enough.”

“I can’t wait,” he said, taking her hand and kissing it.

The entourage wound its way through the streets of New Orleans to the highway for the hour-ride home.

“I was just thinking, I never have to go into New Orleans again,” Katy said, leaning back on the headrest. “What a relief.”

On match day the previous March, with the entire family holding their breath, Katy got her first choice—Saint John’s Parish General Hospital, residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

“Only as far as Saint John’s Parish. Twenty minutes there, twenty minutes back,” Adam said, squeezing her hand, and then when he looked in the rearview mirror and saw that the girls were occupied having a Barbie boxing match, he lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed it.

“I’m so proud of you,” he said.

“You are? Aw, that’s so nice. I feel like a success today, making everyone proud. I wonder how long it will take to screw that up.”

“Katy, you’re nuts. You won’t screw it up. And I have a surprise for you.”

“Let me guess, you fixed the bathtub.”

“Better than that. The bathroom in the bunk room is finished.”

“No way! I haven’t been upstairs in months.”

“That’s why I could get it finished,” he said, laughing. “And the nursery is a nursery again.”

“Aw, but I don’t want Adelaide upstairs by herself. She’s too young.”
