Holding each other afterward felt so amazing in the daylight, lying on the old blanket that smelled of saddle soap and alfalfa. They had no immediate obligations, Tina’s needs being met by someone else.

“I’m sorry I didn’t take advantage of this before the baby was born,” Maggie said. “I’d drag you out to the woods for sex daily if I could.”

“Ha! We can still do it.”

“I hope the nanny didn’t hear me. Ugh, me and my loud mouth.”

“I love your loud mouth. Don’t worry about the nanny.”

“I think a mosquito just bit my ass,” Maggie said, sitting up. “When the bugs come out, it’s over.”

“Ha! You’re right,” Justin said. “But it was nice while it lasted.”

They got dressed and shook the blanket out.

“I didn’t even see you put your saddlebags on.”

“Yes, this was premeditated,” Maggie said. “I have to be more creative with the kid around all the time. We might think about that bunk room you were talking about because pretty soon she’s going to be in our business.”

“I’ll give it some thought. It’s something I didn’t think we would have to decide on so soon. More room!”

“I really don’t want to raise her as an only child,” Maggie said. “But the thought of going through that again is not appealing.”

They untied their horses and climbed on. “It’s getting late. I hate to have to cut our ride short,” Justin said.

They rode home in silence for a bit before broaching the subject of intentionally getting pregnant.

“My best friend is my brother,” Justin said. “Now, with Chris in the picture, he’s becoming more important, too. I’d like that for Tina.”

“Okay, that settles it. I just wish you could carry the kid for me.”

“Ha! I wish I could. But be realistic. I’m thinking about another year with no alcohol,” Justin whined.

“Yeah, forget the current limitations. I’ll be ready for AA by the time this kid is conceived.”

“When do you want to try?”

“How about after Christmas? Then they’ll have birthdays close together if it works out.”

They high-fived.

“Last one to the cottage makes dinner tonight,” Maggie said.

As they raced through the bayou, their laughter rung out, getting the attention of the wild horses nearby, who seemed to shake their heads in exasperation.
