Chapter 9

My head pounded, and waves of nausea came in time with the throbbing pain. When I tried to open my eyes, the first thing I saw was Will Peterson’s worried face.

“Oh, thank God, she’s awake,” he said to a nurse who had just come in to check on me.

“Good. I’ll let the doctor know right now.”

I felt his hand gripping mine. I lifted my head, and my gaze swept the room. Even with blurry vision, I could see Mark Spinoza and Ryan Maddox standing side by side.

“Why the hell are you here?” I muttered, looking right at Ryan.

“She’s back,” he said with a smirk.

“Is the baby okay?” I asked, resting my head against the pillow.

“She’s fine,” Mark said. “The only reason you’re not is because you weren’t wearing a seatbelt.”

“Yeah, it’s difficult to get a seatbelt on with your hands tied behind your back. Did Emory make it? I hope not.”

“He’s fine. Beat up from the airbag is all. He’ll be behind bars for a good long time,” Mark said. “We also have Myrla’s killer in custody.”

“Does it make you feel like a he-man talking about this shit while she’s in a hospital bed?” Ryan asked, practically baring his teeth at Mark.

“It’s okay, Ryan,” I said. “Mark, thank you. I’m sure Eimy is relieved.”

“She brought the baby to see you,” Ryan said. “Are you up to it?”

“Yes, I can see her. I’m so glad Yasmine is okay.”

Ryan left the room, and no one said anything for a bit.

“I’m not sure how I feel about you or Maddox being in my room, Mark,” I finally said. “It’s kind of an invasion of privacy.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll be on my way. I’m glad you’re okay.”

I nodded at him, resting my head back against the pillow. “I feel like someone threw a sledgehammer at my face.”

“No offense, but you look like it, too,” Will said. “You’ve got stitches in your mouth, as well. Did he punch you?”

“No, but he pulled my hair, hard.”

“What a fucking creep,” Will shouted.

“It’s okay, buddy,” I said, trying to calm him down. “Don’t get upset.”

“I want to kill him,” he said, showing me a side I didn’t know. He paced around a little, clearly trying to calm down.

I reached up to feel around my face, and besides being hot to the touch like it was on fire, it hurt like hell. “Do you have my purse, by any chance?”

“I do,” Will said. “The police found it on your dolly.”

“Yeah, so much for clearing out that apartment. Give it here, please. I have to look in the mirror.”

He reached behind a curtain and produced my handbag. I dug through it and found a small compact. Hesitantly, I opened it up and gasped.

“Ugh. I wonder how long this will take to go away.” I was black and blue and getting worse while I looked at myself. My lip was huge, with black sutures showing. “I want to go home.”

“Put your call light on and ask the nurse to come back.”
