I did as he suggested. Next, Ryan led Eimy in, holding baby Yasmine.

“Oh no, poor Laura,” she said, crying. “You look so sore. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s not your fault,” I said. “Baby girl looks good.” I pointed to the baby, who was watching me.

“The police said your body got smashed between the front seat and her car seat. That jackass didn’t have her facing the rear like you’re supposed to do with infants,” Eimy cried. “You might have saved her life.”

“Aw, I doubt I did anything so dramatic. But I’m so glad she’s home with you.”

“I am, too. Thank you again, Laura.”

“I still think you’re a bitch to have done what you did to me, but I’ll move on.”

She whimpered a little, which pleased me. Grovel, scoundrel.

“It wasn’t just her,” Ryan said, as if trying to man up.

“It sort of was,” Eimy said, looking contrite. “I broke the girl code.”

“The girl code is a joke.”

“Ryan, shut the hell up,” I spewed. “Eimy, I don’t mean you dating Ryan. I mean what you did by having Myrla staying at your hovel to watch the baby. They’d have been safe at my house because she wouldn’t have entertained a murderer. I’d be home with Yasmine at night, and Myrla would be up in the Bronx.”

Eimy gasped.

“That’s harsh, Laura.”

“Fuck you, Ryan. As a matter of fact, get out.”

Will looked at him with a smirk, his eyebrows up. “I’d get out if I were you,” he said.

“And who are you, old man?”

“Ryan, what a putz. Meet my lover, Dr. Will Peterson.”

We looked at each other and laughed, while Ryan squirmed a bit. He put his hand on Eimy’s back and nudged her toward the door.

“Laura, please forgive me,” she said again. “I hope we can have a relationship someday.”

I just looked at her and frowned. My guess was that she’d discover Ryan was in love with Lisa before too long, and that would be the end of their romance. They left, and with them went my angst. I lay back against the pillow and closed my eyes just as the nurse finally came into the room.

“I’m so glad you’re awake. I called your doc to let him know. How do you feel?”

“I’m fine. I have a headache, but by the looks of my face, it would be weird if I didn’t. When can I get out of here?”

“I’ll ask. Let me get your vital signs.” She took my blood pressure and temperature, watching the monitor. “You looked like he smashed you in the face, but all your systems are a go. Do you need to use the bathroom?”

“Probably,” I said, sitting up. “I can manage.”

She put the side rail down and offered me her hand, which I took, just to get out of bed. I had a hospital gown on but still wore underpants and a bra.

“Did I come in unconscious?”

“You were out like a light. But no broken bones and no concussion. The asshole who was driving broke his arm, just an FYI.”

“I thought he was going to kill me,” I said, leaving her at the door.

“It’s information that police should have. I’ve heard he’s been free on bail in the past.”
