“I want to run to the store for a pregnancy test.”

He looked up at me and threw the magazine into the box. “No way.”

“Yep. I’m two weeks late, believe it or not.”

“Two weeks!” He came to me, pulling me to his body. “How’d we miss that?”

“I think because of the case. I could be late because of the excitement and nerves.”

“What time are we expected at Lisa’s?”

“Now, but I’ll text her. She’s the only person I’ll share with. Why?”

“Let me examine you,” Will said, serious. He was pointing toward the bedroom.

“You’re nuts!” I screamed, laughing. I pushed him away.

“I’m not. Take your pants off and get on the bed.”

I was laughing so hard, there was no way. “Ah, I think not. Let’s go to the store.”

“I’d better change.”

“No, you don’t have to. You don’t even have to go in with me.”

“Yes, I do,” he said. “I want to be in on every step. I’ll document it with photos, too. Let’s do a selfie. Our first discussion about a pregnancy.”

We snuggled together, head to head, and he snapped a picture. “I’d document with photographs during the examination if you let me.”

“Not happening, buddy. You’re out of control.”

I giggled; he was so cute, despite being slightly perverted. I loved the attention. He grabbed his keys and wallet and waited for me to pull flip-flops on.

“I don’t want to go to the drugstore in town,” I said. “That busybody will tell everyone who comes in today that Doc Peterson’s GF bought a pregnancy test.”

“I have nothing to hide. I’m ready to get out the megaphone I stole from Penn when I was on the rowing team.”

“Ha! No, I want to tell Pam ourselves. She’s going to go nuts. Randy’s grandbaby and all.”

“Oh, right? I’m sorry he’s not here for you, sweetheart.”

“It’s okay. I feel his presence every day. And it’s getting stronger right now. I must be losing my mind.”

“You’re just excited.”

We held hands on the way to the car parked on the street. The garage was full of construction material, but we could see the light at the end of the tunnel at last. The attic was the next and final project for the time being. The little bedroom on the first floor that Will used as an office might be the nursery. A wave of excitement went through my body.

“Will, I hope I’m pregnant. What about you?”

“I hope you are, too. I have to confess, I’ll be disappointed if it’s negative.”

“Me, too. But at least we’ll know we’re on the right path.”

“We are definitely on the right path.”

We held hands on the drive to the outskirts of town, where we’d find a big, anonymous chain store.

I found the test, and while I read the box, Will took a half dozen more and placed them in the basket.
