“Nope.” She looked at him sidelong. “So, everything is okay between you and Alan?”

“I wouldn’t go that far. There’s just not the animosity I had at first.”

“And you’re in love with Pam Smith. Or is it Braddock?”

“I’ll always love Pam, that’s for sure. Right now, we’re seeing each other, again. We do this periodically, get together as lovers for a while and then back off. I have trouble staying monogamous. Mind you, not in my marriage, although Julie thought I was having an affair with Pam. But Julie was involved with Alan all along.”

“I see, so two wrongs make a right?”

“Ha! Yeah, sort of.”

“The reason I ask is I’d like to make you a proposition.”

The server finally showed up. “Can I get you anything?” she asked.

“Same thing as my companion,” Dan said. “What is that? Cannoli cake?”

“Rum cake, I think. I’ve been sitting here so long, I forgot.”

“Rum cake it is.”

The server wrote down his order and walked away.

“You were propositioning me,” he said, leaning in a bit.

Shelly could smell him, and it drove her a little nutty, the scent of pine soap and something else, maybe clove cigarettes.

“I was going to offer a chance for you to get revenge on Alan,” she said, shocking herself. She’d never, ever said anything so sexually charged to a man in her life, and he looked taken aback, not smiling, sitting up a little straighter.

“Yikes. You mean by having sex with me?”

“Well, how about by doing this for a while? Getting to know each other, and then we can take the next step. Alan complained about my flat chest once when he was drunk, so I’m assuming he might have said something to you about my body.”

“That was fucked up for him to do,” Dan said, sneering. “I like your body. It’s real, it’s disciplined, and it’s healthy.”

“So, what do you think?” Shelly asked. “Is it a deal?”

“What about Alan?”

“Alan no longer cares what I do. You can ask him yourself, if you’d like.”

Dan sat back in the chair. “I’d love to get to know you better.” He rubbed his chin, studying her face for a moment. “Do you dance?”

“Oh, I dance. Well, not since I’ve been with Alan, but before Alan, I was a regular at the Roadhouse with my nurse buddies.”

“We’ll go to the Roadhouse,” he said. “How about tonight?”

“I’d love to go tonight!”

Dan’s cake and coffee came, and he tucked in. They talked for over an hour.

“I think I’ve had enough coffee,” Dan said. “Let’s make our plan for tonight. How do you want to do this?”

“I’m about to put you on the spot. I don’t want to have to stay at Alan’s house. Do you mind if I hang out at your house before we go?”

“Not at all. You ready? I walked over, so I’ll ride with you if you have a car.”

“Oh, yeah, I drove. Come along with me.”
