Dan had to let Pam know he wasn’t going to come by. Lately, he’d been honest with her about keeping his life separate from hers, and although she claimed that she understood, he knew it had to have hurt her.

“Being with you part of the time is preferable to never being with you,” Pam maintained.

Over the past months, Dan had longed to be married again, with a family, a mother and a father at the head, and a safe place for his boys and his daughter with Julie to visit. Meeting Shelly, he’d be careful, because in the past he’d jumped into relationships, and in time, the women got bored with him. But then he’d discovered he was bored, too. Would Shelly bore him? The only way to find out was to give her a try, and she was offering.

“I’m ready to go when you are,” Shelly said, pushing back from the table. Even though she was wearing a coat, when she stood, it gave Dan a chance to check out her figure that Alan had supposedly criticized.

“If I can make an observation without insulting you, you’re lean. You must run.”

“I run long distance,” she said proudly. “Usually for hours. I’m taking a break today because it’s getting obsessive. I might be trying to fill a void in my life with exercise.”

“It’s healthier than doing it with beer, like I’ve been known to do.”

“My knees can’t take much more. So instead of running, I sit and eat cake with gorgeous guys.”

He squirmed a little bit, a crooked grin on his face.

“Don’t tell me women haven’t said that to you before,” Shelly said, snickering.

“Usually, women that I don’t want to hear it from will say something like that. I want to hear it from you.”

“Is that right? You commented on my body, so I felt like you were fair.”

They left the café and headed down the street to her car. Between the drugstore and the coffee shop, Dan reached for her hand. Since Lily was no longer spying from behind the counter, he was free to do what he pleased.

“You’re holding my hand,” she said.

“I am. Is it okay?”

“We’re at the third-date stage already.”

“What are the first and second stages?” he asked, laughing.

“The first date was coffee and cake, the second was confessing we wanted to spend the day together and commenting on each other’s appearance, the third is hand-holding. Tonight, dancing will be the fourth date, and whatever happens later, well, we’ll just have to see.”

“Why are you making it so easy for me?” Dan asked softly when they reached her car.

“Because I need you for a couple of different reasons. I don’t want to be alone again, and with Alan, I was alone. I never had a serious boyfriend before Alan, and look what that got me.”

“I’m still not sure what the problem is,” Dan said.

“You’ll learn in time, I promise. Tonight, let’s just have fun.”

“Fun it is,” he said, high-fiving her.

The Roadhouse was typically packed on the weekend, and this night was no different.

“You look amazing, by the way,” Dan said.

Shelly’s auburn hair was around her shoulders like a curly veil. She wore a snug white sweater that emphasized her small, high breasts. Dan liked her tight jeans, and knee boots with heels completed her outfit.

“So do you,” she said, aching to be in his arms. “I can’t wait for the music to start.”

They danced to every song, spending part of the evening, when the lights were low, kissing while they danced. When the last song played, they were ready to get home.

Shelly didn’t hesitate before getting into Dan’s bed. She stripped in front of him, proud of her disciplined body. “Here it is, the body that Alan found uninteresting.”
